Attraction details
Owner description: We provide information and interpretation on the history of the Caledonian Canal, as well as an activities booking service and gift shop. Come and learn about the canal, sign up for some canoeing, whitewater rafting or canyoning, and take home some unique souvenirs made by Scottish designers and manufacturers. We have maps and information on how you can travel along the length of the Caledonian Canal, or the Great Glen Way between each of the stopping-off points, how long it will take, facilities, etc. The canal and lock gates outside our door make up the living museum which is the Caledonian Canal.

“Missed the boat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2012

When we visited our party had just missed seeing a boat coming through the lochs, so after a brief look round we thought we would go and look at the animal attraction advertised on a board just past the visitors centre. In my opinion this place is terrible. There were very few animals and the ones that we saw looked to be miserable and not too well cared for. The board outside said rare animals but there were goats, sheep, cows, chickens, turkeys (I think) a couple of very unhappy looking donkeys, one deer, one stag and a pig. I'm no vet or qualified in animal husbandry but the pig was in the most disgusting pen I have ever seen. On the day we called there was no one to take our payment, £1.50 each for pensioners. There was a note on a box fasted to a door of a shed, explaining that the owner was else ware and asked us to put our money in the honesty box which we did. If there had been anyone there when we came back out I would have asked for my money back. Don' t go.

“An Impressive Canal”

Worth a visit to see this and the town itself which sits on the bank of Loch Ness. Fort Augustus makes a good base for exploring all around Loch Ness.

Enjoy the coming and going of the boats on the canal, makes for a fine peaceful day. All of the canal staff were very friendly and welcomed questions.

“Fasinating”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2012

I have seen how they open and close the gate I love it and stay long time watching the events. 3 beautiful yachts were going through. I realised how far |I am from wealth but in the mean time how close to the nature.
