“A lovely hotel.”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

Quite pricey, but worth the money. We stayed in April in a lovely room with a view of the gorgeous garden. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The staff were welcoming and efficient, and the public rooms were magnificient. The food was also outstanding. The location was great too, being just a short stroll from the locks of Fort Augustus. We could not fault our stay in this lovely hotel.

Room Tip: I think all rooms would be beautiful. Ours was a basic double, but perfect!

We stayed a the Lovat for one night in March. The entire experience was good, with email reminders and follow-up, polite and friendly staff (from reception to the restaurant right through to the chamber maids) and really excellent food in the Brasserie. We ate early, at about 6 pm, and got an early-bird discount. We were travelling with our small dog. The dog-friendly rooms are in rooms away from the main hotel, about 20 steps away from the Brasserie. The room was truly dog-friendly, with a bowl, towel and some dog chews provided. The room itself was nice and the walk-in shower room was really great. I had a migraine on the morning that we had to leave, and the staff were very thoughtful - allowing an extension to our check-out so that I had longer to feel better. Reception even asked the cleaning staff not to hoover in adjoining rooms until I had left. If you are visiting Fort Augustus definitely stay here and make sure that you eat in the restaurant.

There is a lot to like about the Lovat, in addition to the Fort Augustus setting. Our room (8) had a great view down Loch Ness and was spacious and well equipped. It had two towel rails and a TV in the ensuite bathroom, both unusual in my experience. The staff were friendly and the service generally good.

The restaurant was not open during the period we were there. Our bistro meals were good but a little variable in quality; the salmon spring roll starter was average, ox cheek main course and poached pear dessert excellent.

Our vist was marred by a couple of things. We had booked and paid in advance for three nights dinner B&B. A week or two before we arrived we were informed the kitchen was closed on the Sunday and directing us to other eating places in Fort Augustus. To rectify this we had to move our stay to exclude the Sunday. The hotel made amends by upgrading our room. The other problem was getting a copy of the bill. I agreed to receive this by email, but some chasing up was required before the bill was eventually received.

The online survey for completion post visit was very comprehensive, the best feedback process we have seen anywhere.

Room Tip: Room 8 is very comfortable and well equipped with good views down Loch Ness

My daughter and I stayed for one night in March. Our room was fine although why we were as far away from reception as you could get on a quiet winters stay I really don't know. We were disappointed that the restaurant was closed on Sunday and Monday nights but were given recommendations by the friendly staff. Great breakfast and again lovely staff.

Room Tip: A canal view is nice

Sadly we are unable to offer full operational services in the quieter months - I am pleased the staff were able to direct you accordingly.

We stayed here for a recent weekend in one of the Studio Rooms which are external to the main hotel building. On arrival we were happy with the room, very clean and a really good size. When we got there on a fairly chilly day the room itself was a bit chilly to so we bumped up the thermostat for the underfloor heating and by the evening it was a much more pleasant temperature (Note: the info tells you it can take between 2 and 4 hours for the temperature to increase and that’s definitely true so tweak it as soon as you get in if you like a warmer room).

The wet-room bathroom layout for the studio was a nice change from the norm and the shower was lovely and warm. The wifi, and extras like umbrella, iron and ironing board, and a good selection of teas and coffees were really good.

We ate in the hotel brasserie one night and have some lovely food. The staff were very pleasant and attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu and drinks. Some fresh bread and home-made pesto was a nice way to start, and our nibbles of haggis bonbons were tasty. Our mains of cod fillet with spinach cannelloni, and pork belly with black pudding both looked and tasted great. A sticky toffee pudding and rhubarb parfait finished off a beautiful meal. Presentation was worthy of Masterchef and the food tasted as good as it looked.

Breakfast at The Lovat was superb with cheery staff for so early in the morning. A very good selection of cereals, yoghurts, fruits, croissants, juices and any and every spread and jam you could want (try the pineapple and ginger jam) from the buffet to start. Toast followed and we picked the Full Scottish from the varied menu. Every element on the plate was lovely and the view was also superb. One of the best hotel breakfasts we've ever had.

All in all a great stay. All the staff were fantastic and friendly, and with a good room and tasty food what more could you ask for.

Experienced The Lovat with my boyfriend for my birthday as a weekend away, and I can happily say we had a brilliant time. The hotel is beautiful, we arrived rather late ( due to snow on our drive up) and the young man on the reception was super helpful and our later arrival was no problem at all. We were shown to our room by him, and he seemed eager to help us with any queries. At breakfast the following morning our odd request was met happily by the waitress. The hotel is in a brilliant location just 5 minutes from the canal and a short walk down to Loch Ness, it is amazing. The room we stayed in (room 11) had an amazing bed! Absolutely huge, great duvet, without a doubt the best sleep we've ever had in a hotel! The room is well equiped, plenty of space and storage space, satelite TV and the bathroom is a great size with plenty of toiletries to use! Brilliant. The room also had a lovely view. The staff (everyone we met) went out of their way to help you, and were so friendly and helpful which is just the nicest thing a hotel can have, they are truly an asset. (Young man on reception late Friday tall with dark hair, and young woman, tall with short hair you deserve a special mention, absolutely great)!
We would return to this hotel if we are in the area again, no questions asked!

Thanks for the great stay.

This was a return trip to the Lovat for us and I'm happy to say it was another lovely break. Firstly the food was if anything better than our last visit. Secondly the staff are so friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have a lovely stay, nothing is too much trouble. The room was nice, but a problem with the heating meant we had to change rooms which worked out well as we were upgraded to one with a view of the Loch. We also booked some treatments with Amanda on the Saturday morning and were delighted with the experience, definitely recommend booking a treatment for yourself while you are there, it's well worth it. The only disappointment was that because it was still out of season, the main restaurant was closed. We would have liked to have had the 5 course meal which was fabulous last time, but although the Brasserie's menu was smaller, what we had was excellent. Hopefully we will return later in the year to sample more delights on offer!!
