The beds are terrible. Mattress dreadful The paper thin walls and creaking floorbeds and banging doors makes it impossible to sleep until everyone has gone to bed. This means that you get to sleep late and then you are awake when the first person gets up. However, it is very clean and tidy.Very expensive room rates for August, but appreciate it is peak time so they are getting away with it. Seems a shame to take advantage of people though

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the main door and toilets

Stayed in the hostel whilst walking the Great Glen Way.

THE GOOD

* A warm welcome from the helpful staff (family run business)
* Great kitchen facilities
* Good bathrooms and shower facilities.
* Very close to Fort Augustus (approximately 150 metres)
* Complimentary tea & coffee.

THE BAD

* The family cat lives in the kitchen/dining area. I do not expect to see cat bowls or cat hairs on the settees in a room where food is prepared by members of the public.
* The rooms have twin beds and that is it. No mirror, chair, coat hangers or waste bin. I understand that this is a hostel, but a small investment could make a big difference.
* The plaster board walls are paper thin and wooden floors creak, so expect to wake up with the first person in the morning.

AND THE UGLY

* The mattresses are very uncomfortable ; very thin and the internal springs create lumps which are easily felt when you lie on them. NOT the best nights sleep.

We stayed in a twin room at Stravaigers for one night.

We did not expect a whole lot from the place, but the service we received, and the very small and conjested rooms with absolutely terrible beds surprised us nonetheless. We paid 46 pounds for one night, and for these money we got two sore backs, The staff at the place did not provide any help. They did not seem to care whether we were there or not.

The place may very well work well as a camp site, but we would definitly not recommend it as a hostel.

We enjoyed our stay at Stravaigers. Easily found from Fort Augustus town centre and only a few minutes walk from lots of pubs and cafes. The rooms were clean, functional, with electricity sockets. The walls are a bit thin but nowhere near as bad as many other hostels! Big functional kitchen and lounge area. Warm and dry. Drying room was full before we got there, but in the twin rooms we had, we had lots of space to dry and the rooms did get warm. At night they got too hot, but better than cold! Only downfall were the pathetic excuses for showers. Having to pump the button every 15 seconds to get a luke warm dribble was upsetting. the toilets were ridiculously noisy and I was very glad I didn't have a room opposite the loos.

Room Tip: We had twins, which were massive compared to twins in other hostels. Really warm. Try not to get a r...

A group of 4 of us stayed here for 1 night in May 2013 whilst walking the Great Glen Way. This lodge ticked all the boxes for appearances as it looks very new and clean. It would have benefited from better sign posting from the Great Glen Way itself as we had a little trouble finding it. The beds were lovely and comfy, with plenty of electrical points available, and we thought that having free coffee and tea available was a nice touch. Unfortunately there were no real drying facilities available, so we had to turn up the heat in our rooms (which we were glad to be able to do) to dry our kit out, but then couldn't get the room cool enough to sleep in without opening the window and being hugely wasteful. Overall, our experience of this lodge was lovely, but the shower facilities let it down. There was no temperature control, and they worked on a push button basis, giving you 15 seconds of at least relatively hot water for each button push. The temperature wasn't too much of an issue as the weather had been decent that day, but if we'd been soaked through, as we had been the day before, these showers would not have been sufficient to warm us up. I'm also a girl, and pushing a button 20 times to get just 5 minutes of water didn't cut it for me. Otherwise, this would have been a 5 star review.

Room Tip: Try to get a room as far away from the bathrooms as you can, as the noise they generate is rather lo...

In the nice village of Fort Augustus there's only one hostel and this is it. It is a hut kinda hostel, cheap (£17) and very near the town center. They have shared bathroom and very small rooms with nothing more than a bunk bed. You can make your own breakfast in the morning at the kitchen. Bunk beds were lousy, and I think there was mold in our room because I woke up feeling really stuffy. I left that behind when I left from this hostel.

We have stayed there for one night and really loved it! We booked a bunk room for 20 pound each. The room had a bund bed in and nothing else, but as we stayed for only a night, that wasn't much of a problem.
The facilities were very clean and spacious!
The kitchen has everything you need: 2 stoves, a microwave, many pots and pans,... also very clean.
Location is just perfect if you want to experience Scotland at its best! It is really quiet and only 3 minutes walk from the south end of Loch Ness, where you have a stunning view over the sea.
Fort Augustus also has all the shops you need including a filling station!
We went there by car, and it is probably not very recommendable if you travel by train, I guess.
Nice staff.
Would return any time!
