“Excellent Bed and Breakfast”
Reviewed August 2, 2011

My wife and I stayed in "Carn A Chuilinn" in July and on numerous other occassions. We have no hesitation in rercommending it either as a Bed and Breakfast base for touring the Loch Ness area or as a well positioned "stop-over" on a journey to the more nothern parts of Scotland. The house is a modern detached property sitting high and well back from the main road; easily found, it is the first house on the left-hand side of the road as the driver enters Fort Augustus from the south. Within walking distance from the house is Fort Augustus Golf Course and beyond, beautiful walks along the banks of the Caledonian Canal. Anne Nicholson, the owner, is very welcoming and, for the short notice traveller who calls personally, she is more than happy to show potential clients the available accommodation prior to them confirming their acceptance. The rooms are large, spotlessly clean and well appointed with coordinated furnishings. Each room has an ensuite with tolleteries etc available. There is constant hot water and a powerful mains-supplied shower. Breakfast is at a time requested by clients and the quality is superb; freshly cooked and with a varied and generous menu. We have no hesitation in recommending this Bed and Breakfast confident that the traveller will find it to be a most comfortable, peaceful and enjoyable location.

Room Tip: All rooms are of a high standard - a twin and family room are available

We booked the day before, arrived in the afternoon and first impressions were good. It's just off the main road in however set back up a nice garden and a beautiful house.
We checked in with Anne who was very nice and let us know where things were and what we could do.
The room was very nice, large, cosy and a nice view of the garden which at one point had a hare running around. Plenty hot water in the morning for a shower. The bed was really comfortable and had a good nights sleep.
We were recomended a few places for food and the one we chose was the boat house, turkish style food and was cooked really well, would also recomend this place to others.
Unfortunate for us the weather was quite wet during the day but Anne offered to dry off our coats for us which is a nice touch.
Breakfast was perfect. I love my food and this was brilliant. You let Anne know the night before and it's cooked to perfection in the morning. Plenty of cerials, fruit, yoghurt to start with then the cooked breakfast and plenty of toast.
Would definitely recomend this place to others, couldn't get a nicer person than Anne, book up and you will understand why.

Room Tip: Room 1 was perfect.

I can confirm everything that has been said before about this B&B, spacious clean and comfortable rooms, good and plentiful food at breakfast. Hospitality is excellent and well above average. Anne was lovely and could not have been more helpful and accomodating. Would not hesitate to recommend Carn a Chuilinn and its owner to anyone.
Important to us was ample onsite off road parking. The place was easy to find and even though on the main road, the house is well set back and quite private. A lovely spot and despite all the clouds and rain on our trip, it was great to see such a lovely view every time you look out of the window. We had the room upstairs which I think has the best view with a double aspect. Although when we booked we were too late for the king-size room (on ground floor) we had a huge room with 2 single beds and were offered them put together, but not necessary for us and we slept like logs.
The walk to the village is not that bad actually, took us 15-20 mins only.
We travelled miles around the highlands from here, Fort Augustus was a very good central base, we even got up as far as Lairg and Loch Shin to see friends, and having a lovely B&B to come back to after each long day, and at a very reasonable prices, was a big bonus for us. (We have paid a lot more a night for some B&B's and not been half as satisfied.)
We recommend the Lock Inn in the village for a pub meal, the food was very good.
Try the walk from just down the road by the B&B it goes through the old graveyard and follows the river up and then back down to FAug and Loch Ness, nothing too strenuous but pretty.
Finally do NOT even bother to read the "grumpies" review (2008) sounds like sour grapes from unreasonable guests.

Room Tip: Ask for the upstairs twin room for best view

We were en route between Lands End and John O Groats, this was our last but one day. After staying in travelodges (absolute cr@p) Anne provided a warm welcome, excellent food, and even helped by washing AND drying some clothes for our next days riding.
Recommend to anyone wanting a quality residence in a lovely area of the country!

A bit outside Fort Augustus in a wonderful surrounding. The rooms are very spacious, nicely decorated with modern bathrooms, TV, etc. The lounge is cosy and makes you feel at home. Breakfast was just delicious and Anne is the most wonderful host a traveller can ask for.
I very much enjoyed my stay!

A first class B&B. We have stayed twice in the last month. The welcome was very warm, room very clean and extremely spacious, a sitting room is provided and the breakfast was top-class. One of the best we have stayed in. It was very quiet too giving us excellent sleeps. We would recommend this one to anyone visiting Fort Augustus and we doubt you'd find a better.

Room Tip: Roon 3 was great but so will the others be.
