We visited in late September thinking most of the crowds would be down, but they were not. There are so many tours/buses to this location that I think it is likely crowded all year long. It is big enough where you don't feel cramped, but it is loud and you feel the crowds as you move through the narrow hallways/stairs inside the castle. That said, very nice views of the loch and many great photo opportunities inside. There is quite a bit of historical significance to the castle, so worth reading a bit before you go.

Stunning views of Loch Ness. If you enjoy exploring the remains of a historic medieval castle -this is one place you should not take for "Granted". The guide from Historic Scotland gave an excellent 30 minute synopsis of what is known about Urquhart.

Took one look at the Entrance Fee and another at the current state of the ruins and realised we would be better off financially taking a Castle Cruise and viewing the ruins from the Loch with a commentary from Gordon the skipper.
Have to say it was a good decision although there were numerous people clambering through the ruins.
When I think of the Castles & Palaces with free entry in Spain.
This country has so many rip-offs & Tourist Traps.

Visited on a Friday in October, had no trouble parking but some obviously did, they were all over the place, made up their own spaces! Anyway, on we went, paid the reasonable fee and were told that a tour was starting in a few minutes, so we did that. It was excellent, told with passion and authority. Well worth it.

Great ruins overlooking the Loch and the area that is green and lush. Be prepared to do some walking. The work to preserve this castle that has been through a lot is very much appreciated.
