Owner description: An atmospheric ruin overlooking the dark waters of Loch Ness, this dramatic castle has a long and bloody history. Once one of Scotland's mightiest strongholds, Urquhart's strategic location gave it a key role in the Scottish battle for independence. It came under the control of Robert the Bruce before a 150-year power struggle between the Stewart dynasty and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

“Great old ruin to visit.”
Reviewed August 21, 2014

As part of a shore excursion we visited this old Castle Urquhart. Initially it took us a while to get our tickets because the line was pretty large. You will need to be fit for the visit here, there is a lot of walking up and down steps.

Very interesting though and it has great views over Loch Ness. We hoped to spot the infamous nessie but the weather was a raining and overcast. Still an interesting runied castle with lots to see and a good visitor centre.

“Good if you into ruins”
Reviewed August 20, 2014 via mobile

Pretty nice ruins with a lot of explanations around. The view on Loch Ness is awesome here and the whole caste grounds are simply amazing. But there are a lot of tourists which I personally dislike. But you need to expect that. I am not highly interested in ruins but it was quite nice.

“Fantastic attraction”

Brilliant attraction, well priced and informative. Nice touch having a piper and the grounds are well maintained. Only negative is they could use more parking but no fault of theirs.

“Well worth seeing”
Reviewed August 19, 2014

The visitors centre sets the scene with a great little video about the castle's history. The film can be subtitled in almost any language. There's a choice between guided visit or wander round on your own. The ruins are extensive, and you can even climb to the top of the keep from where the view of Loch Ness is stunning.

“Awesome Castle Ruins”
Reviewed August 17, 2014

We took in this castle and what a great experience. This castle sets on Loch Ness and has a commanding view of the loch. There is plenty to explore on the grounds. You get to really hands on experience as you tour the castle. There is a nice gift shop and cafe. There information center provides plenty of history. We really enjoyed our visit and would recommend this castle be on your itinerary.
