Owner description: An atmospheric ruin overlooking the dark waters of Loch Ness, this dramatic castle has a long and bloody history. Once one of Scotland's mightiest strongholds, Urquhart's strategic location gave it a key role in the Scottish battle for independence. It came under the control of Robert the Bruce before a 150-year power struggle between the Stewart dynasty and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

“Beautiful views from Loch Ness”
Reviewed November 4, 2013 via mobile

The grounds of Castle Urquhart were beautiful but a little difficult to navigate since there was construction. The views of Loch Ness from the castle were great and the cafe was warm and inviting! Great gift shop, too! Lots of history here! Great visit!

“Magic places, amazing views”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

Yes, it's in ruins, but it's seriously a great place. It may be because it is right on Loch Ness, but the atmosphere it truly magic. The view from the top is incredible. We are so much happy we eventually decided to take the bus tour that brought us there.

“Big Upgrade”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

We were here a number of years ago and enjoyed it. They have greatly improved the whole experience. You will know and understand Urquhart's history when you are done. One note: if you go in the summer get there early or late. LOTS of tourists coming by boat, car, and bus to the point that parking is difficult. Also, too many tourists spoils the visit.

“2nd Favorite Castle in Scotland”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

My first favorite is the Edinburgh Castle. This castle is also well maintained but smaller in comparison to Edinburgh. The grounds were being up-fitted when we were there but all areas were still accessible. This castle has a tremendous amount of history associated with it, such as Mary Queen of Scots. It is nestled directly on the Loch Ness and can be toured either by driving to the location (ample parking) or by boat. Many tourists took a Loch Ness Boat ride (began with a bus tour) that ended at Urquhart Castle (they re-entered the bus in the castle parking lot). Wonderful way to see both the water, the highlands and the Castle. Definitely a must see when traveling through Scotland.

“Well presented and worth a stop.”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

Be sure to take in the 8 minute informational video before you tour the ruins. It is worth your time. The visitor center is organized not overwhelming and the ruins are fun to explore. I did not experience the hoards of people in early October on a weekend. I felt like I had time to explore and enjoy the amazing views. It was fun to climb the tower view the countryside through the arrow and gun openings in the walls. Great photo opportunities.
