Owner description: An atmospheric ruin overlooking the dark waters of Loch Ness, this dramatic castle has a long and bloody history. Once one of Scotland's mightiest strongholds, Urquhart's strategic location gave it a key role in the Scottish battle for independence. It came under the control of Robert the Bruce before a 150-year power struggle between the Stewart dynasty and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

“Classic ruined castle, with classic history.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2012

Well worth a visit. And you have a great vantage point for Loch Ness, while avoiding the midges we met on trying to have a picnic on the lake shore! Usual sort of price for a site of this sort, but it seemed worth it all round, unlike some. It was not a great day when we visited, but still worth it.
Classic site for a castle with commanding views on the banks of the Loch. Once an impressive stronghold linked to all important aspects of Scotish history, despite its present ruinous (but safe) state. Still has a ruined tower house that you can go up, commanding splendid views of the famous loch and Great Glen.

“Castle worth stopping”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

The movie was great to understand the ruins. I wasn't all that interested in seeing more castle ruins but the castle has such a great story that I'm glad we stopped to have a look.

“Watch the intro film on arrival”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2012

The Castle isn’t cheap to visit and you can't get in or out without winding your way through the gift shop, but if you’re visiting the loch, you might as well do the castle as well.

A definite consideration is to see the short introductory film first. This is on the left hand side of the shop when you enter. The film sets the background and history of the castle before bringing you up to the very present.

Access is good around the grounds and up to the top of the retained tower. The views over the loch are obviously impressive and give you a good vantage point to look out for Nessie.
