“Great place for a nights kip!”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

Myself and my 3 children had a great stay at this bunkhouse.. got the room to ourselves which was a bonus.. rang number on gate and paid at the spar! Had a drink and card games at the Smoo cave hotel which was perfect.. having visited the really impressive cave! This is definitely a very unspoilt and rugged and beautiful part of the world well worth exploring!

We stayed at this location for 3 nights with a group of 12 persons. The kitchen was large enough for us to cook a meal, but there was just enough place to eat.
The beds were good, only there was almost no place in the bedrooms for our luggage.(one suitcase/backpack per person)
On the otherhand, the location is priceless. With clear weather, it's very nice to eat your breakfast on the terrace with a magnificent view on the coastal area. A real recommendation is a nice walk to Faraid head and see the sunset. When the sea fog comes in, you can stay in the small, but cozy common room.
On negative point, we found our washed clothes inside the bunkhouse, still moist. It seems that the guests becomes second on the washing line.

Room Tip: Large washing machine for one pound

While on our latest trip to Scotland my wife and I wanted to travel on the cheap so we decided to try hostel accommodations whenever possible. When in the far north of Scotland we pre-booked a two night stay at the Lazy Crofter Bunkhouse, our small private room turned out to be quite small and somewhat comical, the two of us had to choreograph our movements to maneuver within the room; we had a good laugh over this. The bathrooms just down the hall were spotless as was the kitchen area, each morning a hostel staff member was in cleaning or scrubbing somewhere of something. Just across the road can be found the SPAR local grocery store and most attractions are within walking distance. We are avid geo-cachers and we found several throughout the area, if the weather permits we recommend taking the combination boat & ferry to Cape Wraith Lighthouse for a thrill of a lifetime and a great virtual cache.

Room Tip: If you don't mind cramped quarters and need some privacy then go for the private room, otherwise...

We stayed in the tiny private room for one night. We were warned that the room was small but after reading other reviews I had my concerns. Others have stated that it is so small two people cannot stand in the room but this simply is not true. It is indeed a very small room but as long as you don't have too much luggage it is plenty big enough. There are two good sized lockers in the room and the kitchen and living room is great as well as the outside patio. We were given bedding but as the beds were pre-made on arrival we were confused as to what we were suppose to do. We had no idea whether to strip the bedding in the morning or where to put used bedding and when we tried the duvet fell apart as it was quite worn and mouldy in places. Similarly there was no system in the kitchen for tea towels and old dirty ones just got reused. A few more simple instructions and systems put in place would make this place perfect. And maybe some new duvets and pillows. It was on the whole quite clean and comfortable.

We stayed here for one night in a dorm with 6 bunk beds and were very impressed by the standard of its facilities and excellent location with a small supermarket only a few minutes walk away. This is a very attractive hostel with a nice covered porch area just outside for sitting and eating (we ate breakfast there). The bathrooms and showers are excellent, comfortable bunks with thick mattress and good bedding (sleep sheet provided), kitchen very well equipped and communal area comfortable if a bit cramped when the hostel is busy. There is plenty of parking across the road. Altogether a very pleasant place to stay for £17 per person, excellent value and comfort.

A really nice bunkhouse with good facilities. A great find! Just make sure you book ahead as we stayed in July and on the first night we couldn't get in as full. I hear other people saying the 2 person rooms are tiny, this is not true, there is plenty of room for 2 and bags.

Some good points, such as good showers with plenty of hot water, well designed kitchen and a useful covered patio for sitting out and storing cycles. We had booked the ‘tiny’ private room and it must be the smallest I have ever stayed in. Only one person at a time could stand up and there was no chance of swinging anything in there, never mind a cat. There was a small locker for possessions but the door was broken. As there were no room keys of any sort, we took our valuables with us when we went out for a meal. Sleeping in the bottom bunk felt like sleeping in a coffin because of the low head room. Sound proofing seemed non-existent so this could be a problem if you have noisy neighbours. Luckily ours were thoughtful guests who did not make much noise but I had a lousy night’s sleep in my ‘coffin’ and could not get away from the place fast enough. Neither bedside lamp worked, one was literally hanging off the wall and was an electrical hazard. I have been assured by the hostel management that the lights have now been repaired although I do feel that this fault should have been fixed prior to the room being let out. There is definitely a lack of attention to maintenance and the policy of cramming as many people as possible into the building is to the detriment of the ‘hostel experience’. We visited some friends down the road at the SYHA and having seen both hostels I wish I had stayed with SYHA.

Room Tip: When the person on the end of the phone says 'the tiny room' that's exactly what they me...
