“Great location, cozy rooms, beautiful view from terrace”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

I stayed two nights here and I would stay again. Although I had a mixed experience of comfort, on the first night the room got kind of cold through the night and the shower was lukewarm and on the second night the room was nice and warm as well as the shower. There is a well stocked spar and petrol station very close to the hostel which is very handy. Durness beach and smoo cave are close to the hostel. Overall the beds, bathrooms and kitchen were clean and suitable. As the hostel is part of a wider hospitality business group, I would imagine the standard of the hostel wouldn't ever fall too much so I think it would always be a safe bet. It looks much nicer from the outside than the other closest hostel. The best thing about this hostel was the sheltered terrace with a view of the Ocean, really beautiful.

Booked and confirmed 12 places in April, only to be informed that they had a better deal three weeks before we were due to arrive. Great way to run a business and I'll not be returning. 12 unhappy people looking for alternative accommodation.

Happy to say that our experience mirrored those of previous reviewers. The place is warm, dry and clean. There are 3 or 4 dorms accommodating different sized groups. Good kitchen, clean showers, no annoying notices forbidding this or promoting that. Just good, honest accommodation for £16 a night. It is a short walk from here to the Cape Wrath Ferry or to the local pub. A restaurant operates next door and provides key access etc.
A great option if you want to overnight on the North Coast and avoid feeding the midges.

I stayed here in July 2005 but I recall vividly the depth of the mattresses in the bunk rooms - perhaps the most comfortable I've experienced in any hostel anywhere in the world! Spotless clean, well set up - the epitomy of how a hostel should be. I would definitely recommend.

Stayed here for the week during the annual Cape Wrath Challenge.
Well appointed kitchen and sufficient showers. Plentiful hot water and everything spotlessly clean!
The 2 bunk rooms are small, but we were told that before we arrived, but since your only sleeping there it's not much of a problem, there are larger 4 and 6 bunk rooms available too.
There is a laundry room with giant waning machine, but note the drying room is the laundry room, there is no forced drying and hanging space limited, however there is a great washing line just outside, and it always seems to be windy in Durness!
Overall, a friendly, clean, well appointed bunkhouse

Room Tip: Take a smaller 2 bunk room of you want some privacy

A modern comfortable clean bunkhouse. Large well-equiped kitchen meant that cooking was not stressful like it can be at too many bunkhouses. Outdoor verandah was ideal for eating and meeting, especially because it was staggeringly-good weather. Access to the property was available at all times, so I was able to get in and showered mid-afternoon after two days out in the hills. The owners also run a hotel/restaurant so the guests there came and mingled. Overall, very impressed.

When we arrived we were told our booking was not in the diary, however one of the double rooms was free so no harm done! We knew from other reviewers the double rooms were tight for space and with around 2 foot of clearance between the bunk bed and the wall, it did make for an interesting stay which required cooperation and planning. However the beds were comfortable and the room was clean and warm (as was the rest of the hostel), anyway "you pays yer money, you make yer choice".
The kitchen was spacious, well equipped and had lots of storage area. The separate living area was comfortable and warm. There was also a large, covered, outside decking area with tables and chairs which had wonderful views of the North Atlantic. The showers and toilets were excellent, well maintained and clean.
We would add that the sound insulation between the double rooms could be better... but that would make the room even smaller!

Room Tip: pack light if you are booking the double rooms!
