I booked up a twin room for myself & a friend after scouring TA for somewhere to stay. Hillside B&B seemed to be the most popular by far & seemed the obvious choice. I'm so happy with the honest reviews from the users of TA, Tony & Jill didn't disappoint with their friendly warm welcome into their home.
The house is newly built & designed with the B&B trade in mind, open airy & comfortable. You can choose to hide away in your room or make yourself at home in the living room & a chance to talk to the other guests that might be staying there at the time. Free wifi is also available with a surprisingly good speed considering how remote Durness is.
The twin room I stayed in was clean & modern with en-suite shower that had piping hot water flowing every time i used it. The bed was comfortable which allowed me to catch up on some much needed sleep as we were late in every night.
Cereal, fruit & a hearty cooked breakfast were all available in the morning. Didn't leave the house feeling hungry & set me up for the day which is a good thing as there's not very much choice in the way of eateries in the winter in Durness.
Hillside B&B is set back from the 'main' coast road & only a very short drive to get away from the sparse village lights & out into some truly dark skies. Coming up from near London where light pollution is a real pain to Durness are two opposites, the night skies are amazing to look at & we were treated to glimpses of the Aurora through broken clouds. You also have the benefit of an amazing coastal road which is worth the drive along just for the views & amazing scenery.
I intend to return to Durness come next autumn/winter & my first phone call will be to Tony & Jill to see if they have any rooms.

There's a reason why this place now has 49 excellent reviews. Actually, there are several in fact but the main reason is that the people that run it and their attention to every aspect of the services they provide are superb. They even went out of their way to return a pair of trainers we had left behind to the place they knew we would be after we had checked out. Thanks very much.

We booked well in advance per email. After our email exchanges, I felt then that already Tony was a friend. Some months later when we finally met, I found this to completely correct ... and then added Jill and Ellie to the list of friends.
The room, the lounge, the breakfasts, the welcome, the care and helpfulness ...all so excellent. We had been travelling for some days before arrival at Durness and Jill asked if we had any clothing we would like washed and washed this for us while we had the day out enjoying the countryside.
Ferry/bus trip to Cape Wrath, beach/ cliff walking, inland walking and climbing the mountain just to SE of Durness - and Hillside - all not to be forgotten.

We hope to go back one day ... all the way from Australia !

Equal best of 20 B&Bs stayed at en route from Lands End to John o'Groats. Combination of room size, separate large lounge, comfort, quiet, hospitality outstanding. Since it was cheapest of all 20, we rate it best value of all. We were travelling by buses - if you are, ask to be put off near Smoo Cave not in centre of Durness.

A quick note to say that we stayed one night at Hillside, while enroute from Skye to Orkney in Sept (2011). The room was terrific, clean, very accessible. This was built to be a B&B, the ensuite is large, modern and spotless. I really liked having a lounge area to relax in before bed. The breakfast is very good, and the hosts are very friendly. I based our decision to stay here because of Tripadvisor recommendations, and was not disappointed. Location is a bit remote, but then Durness is a bit remote too.

We were staying in Durness for a wedding and booked Hillside B & B. Tony had very kindly offered us early check in and our room was perfect, modern, very clean and overlooked the fields and hens! We slept very well and thoroughly enjoyed our cooked breakfast, particuarly the fresh eggs! The lounge was also very comfortable and we would highly recommend this B & B. We were made to feel very welcome.

Room Tip: Twin room overlooks the fields and has a lovely view.
