I booked up a twin room for myself & a friend after scouring TA for somewhere to stay. Hillside B&B seemed to be the most popular by far & seemed the obvious choice. I'm so happy with the honest reviews from the users of TA, Tony & Jill didn't disappoint with their friendly warm welcome into their home.
The house is newly built & designed with the B&B trade in mind, open airy & comfortable. You can choose to hide away in your room or make yourself at home in the living room & a chance to talk to the other guests that might be staying there at the time. Free wifi is also available with a surprisingly good speed considering how remote Durness is.
The twin room I stayed in was clean & modern with en-suite shower that had piping hot water flowing every time i used it. The bed was comfortable which allowed me to catch up on some much needed sleep as we were late in every night.
Cereal, fruit & a hearty cooked breakfast were all available in the morning. Didn't leave the house feeling hungry & set me up for the day which is a good thing as there's not very much choice in the way of eateries in the winter in Durness.
Hillside B&B is set back from the 'main' coast road & only a very short drive to get away from the sparse village lights & out into some truly dark skies. Coming up from near London where light pollution is a real pain to Durness are two opposites, the night skies are amazing to look at & we were treated to glimpses of the Aurora through broken clouds. You also have the benefit of an amazing coastal road which is worth the drive along just for the views & amazing scenery.
I intend to return to Durness come next autumn/winter & my first phone call will be to Tony & Jill to see if they have any rooms.
