“Fantastic Hotel with superb service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2009

We had our wedding function at The Dornoch Castle Hotel on 3rd October, 2009. We stayed there on the night before and of the night of the wedding itself which was held across the road at Dornoch Cathedral. The Hotel is a wonderful mix of both ancient and modern with the splendid rooms holding their ancient charm. We stayed on the Friday night in 'Cathedral View' room which was spacious and luxurious. On our wedding night we stayed in 'The Old Courtyard' room which was quite breathtaking. Both rooms were extremely comfortable and had a welcome glass of sherry waiting.
The food at the Dornoch Castle Hotel is first class and is served in the open and airy garden restaurant. On the Friday, we had steaks which were cooked to perfection and there was an extensive menu to choose from. On our wedding day, the food was immaculately presented and was of a very high standard indeed. The service at the hotel is excellent and we must say a big thank you to Colin, Roz and staff for making our stay unforgettable. Although we stayed here for a particular occasion and found it faultless, we have stayed here previously for a 'romantic gettaway' and found it equally excellent. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants high standards in food, service and location which is excellent value for money.

Perfectly situated in the heart of Dornoch opposite the cathederal that Madonna was married in. This hotel is in an ancient castle so so you expect some quirkiness about the rooms but this adds to the charms. Very welcoming bar with roaring log fire and a very good selection of fine whiskys. Food is excellent and ther staff are very friendly with a high level of service. I would agree with one comment about thin walls in the modern extension so go for the rooms in the old castle if you can. However I last stayed in this hotel 10 years ago under last owners and the improvement since then is staggering. I will definately be back as this is THE place to stay in Dornoch.

Stayed here on a special D,B&Bkfast rate, food lovely and staff very friendly did enjoy my stay, and Dornoch it is a lovely area only slight grump was that the room [garden superior} could be doing with some sound insulation it was very noisy at times you could hear quite clearly the person next door snoring, and as the room was above dining area there was background noise from it.
Can't honestly say that I was over bothered as we didn't spend too much time in the room but could see it being a problem for others { light sleepers eg. }
Would probably stay here again but book a room in the castle part where the walls are said to be 9 foot thick.

Stayed here one night, DB&B in a Superior Room - £200. The dinner costs £27.50 per head, which is great value for money as it was a lovely meal, and the service from all members of staff is excellent.

My main concern is that we basically paid £145 for B&B in what I would class as way below a Superior Room. It had faded decor and furniture, shaky old windows, dirty mirrors and just a general feeling of having not been bothered with.

I did email the hotel regarding this, but they feel extremely justified in charging this price for this room, in high season. I think not.

It is in a lovely location, with friendly & helpful staff, and it was a great meal - but just watch what you are paying for when it comes to the rooms. Check the descriptions and prices online - and just make sure you get a decent room - not Room 10 on the 3rd floor.

Or, do what we should have done the night before at The Glenmoriston Townhouse Hotel in Inverness. We arrived at this hotel at around 5.30ish, not having booked, and asked what kind of deal they could do. They gave us their Superior Room that was normally priced at £170 for £100 - well worth it! If you did this at Dornoch, it might just be worth it - otherwise watch out.

have just written a review for the Alexandr Hotel, Fort William - Dornoch Castle was around the same rate and abolutely knock spots off the Alex for value. Loads of character and the history is available to read. Spacious, well furnished rooms ( we had two different one each night). really nice touches all over the hotel, and clean.Pretty gardens, friendly staff. The whole town is a picture.
Plenty of choice for breakfast.
evening dinner was good - had to wait 30 minutes for pudding though. Chose apricot crumble which contained far too much sultana and raisen, and stole the flavour.

downside - Bar prices a little high,

We will be back

The staff were very nice and helpful. and the meal was fantastic. Will not wait for a special event before we will return. maybe in the winter so we can light the fire..

I had to travel up to Dornoch on business and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Dornoch Castle Hotel. The Hotel is well siutated in this lovely little town just over the road from Dornoch Cathedral.Had I been coming with a partner for a romantic weekend I would have found that Dornoch Castle Hotel had all the character you could wish for and still retained a cosy feel - the staff were so helpful and couldn't do enough for you. The food was fantastic, lots of local produce which I always like to see.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Castle is located in the historic town of Dornoch across from the stunning 13th century Cathedral, boasting stunning views of the town. The central position of the hotel makes it ideal for exploring Dornoch, home to the world famous Royal Dornoch Golf Course, which overlooks the breath taking golden sand beach. Dornoch is also well situated for those looking to explore more of what the Highlands have to offer. The historic Castle is built on the site of the original Bishop’s Palace of St Gilbert, who founded the Cathedral in the early 13th century. The building eventually sold on and in 1947 became a hotel after some extensive work, which maintain much of the character of the Castle as a stately, historic and comfortable home. The Castle boasts a total of 22 en-suite bedrooms situated both within the original castle and the modern garden extension. There is a variety of room types available including; standard, superior, deluxe and our award winning Old Courtroom. Due to the castle’s layout each bedroom has its own special ambiance, great care has been taking in creating a distinctive character in each bedroom. The Castle's restaurant has retained an AA rosette standard, through the exceptional work from the chefs. The malt whisky selection is second to none and can be enjoyed in the cosy stone-lined whisky bar with the roaring fire to protect you from the Scottish winds, in the summer the walled garden is the perfect setting to relax during the long summer nights. Coming Summer 2016: The Dornoch Distillery will be opening soon on the grounds of the Dornoch Castle Hotel producing 'Old Style' Whisky and Hand Crafted Organic Gin from scratch. ... more   less
