Visited here with in laws today. Skipped starter to save ourselves for desert, excellent choice! The decor here is dated but the food is very good and very reasonably priced. The whiskey sauce for chicken, venison casserole, very spicy pork all excellent. Deserts home made, the chocolate pie was fantastic and the cheeseboard excellent value. Thank you.

This is an excellent restaurant for Scottish fayre, which is to be expected I guess. We were staying overnight in Dornoch and decide to eat here. We were not disappointed! The venison pie was superb! The wine is very reasonably priced.

The building is elegant - see photo - the restaurant is nicely furnished, the tables are not too close together and the staff are friendly and efficient.

Go there and enjoy their great food!

We tried this restaurant on the back of all the positive reviews on Trip Advisor. We had an excellent evening and this was one of the best meals of our Highland trip.

This restaurant is a busy place so I would recommend booking whichever day you choose. We were staying in Dornoch just the one night and rang to see if they could fit us in. It was a close thing but we manged to get an 8:30 table - 30 mins before last orders. So did Sutherland House live up to expectations? - every bit!!

The interior of the restaurant is very tradition with dark wood paneling and tables. The staff are very smart and polite and the lady owner will come out and walk the room asking people how things are going or just generally chatting about your day. A nice touch.

We were given a warm welcome and shown straight to the table. Drinks orders were promptly taken as we studied the menu. The food is fairly safe and traditional home cooking with a Scottish twist. There is lots of choice, Fish, Chicken, Venison, Steak and various pies, stews and specials.

Special mention must go to the Haggis starter, complete with neaps and tatties with a delicous cream and whisky sauce. This could also be had as a larger meal for main course. It tasted fantasic! For mains we all had various steaks and all were cooked perfect to order. They also provide a selection of potatoes and vegetables of the day that accompany each meal. The portions are very generous, so you may want to miss the starter if you really want dessert. Needless to say we did not manage dessert, in fact we left some of our main meal as we were so full. A tip for the restaurant here is that the accompanying potatoes and vegetables could be served in a seperate serving dish as this would allow people to put them on their plate as and when needed. The plated meal which includes everything does look a great amount and may over face some people. This is only a minor point as the meal was trully fantastic and extremely enjoyable.

Prices here are not cheap with steaks nudging the £20 mark with sauce but good quality is never cheap and the food on offer here is top class and well worth the money.

This was a great night and a very satisfying meal. Full marks to everyone at Sutherland House who work so hard to make this happen.

If you want to step back in time for an evening, then this is the place for you.

Old world charm, delightfully hosted with a couple of items I haven't seen on a menu for years.

Might not be for the more adventurous diner but it delivers on the implied promise you receive when you first enter.

We finally mustered up the courage to try the haggis and the food was delicious.

We dropped in here recently when in Dornoch and were told by the waitress/hostess that they were done serving for the night and that they were full anyway. This despite a table or two that were open in plain view of the front door and it being obvious that several tables were hardly even started on their meals and the fact that it wasn't all that late, anyway - maybe 8:30 or so.

We sort of forced the issue as we were starving after a long day, pointing to an open table and asking if it was specifically reserved for the night or not.

After we were grudgingly seated we were told that because they were full, the service would be slow. Actually we appreciated the warning although it turned out to be unjustified as the service was fine, the prices were fair and the food just fabulous.

The owner came out to chat us up a bit during the meal, she was wonderful. My guess is that our first impression might have been driven by a hostess that wanted to go home early as several other parties came in to be seated long after we sat down.

The rooms were interesting and full of energy. also they were well ventilated which you wouldn't think was all that big a deal until you travel this part of the world in a heat wave and find almost anything indoors to be stiflingly hot and stuffy because, of course, no one has a/c (why shouldl they .....most of the time, anyway?!)
