“Lovely view, but poor hygiene.”
Reviewed July 23, 2013 via mobile

The place is fantastic, especially to go with children. But I was given a caravan that was so filthy that it was impossible to stay in it. Instead of giving me another one without paying extra, they made me pay for an upgrade so that I could sleep in a clean place. Although they offered me a discount, I was unsatisfied. They should have given me that without paying extra. I ended up accepting their offer because there was no other way out ! Also the people from the reception took a long time to come up with a solution. It was 6.00 when I was finally to unpack !

Have to agree with the previous reviewer though from a different viewpoint. Yes this is a big and very busy site which must be taking in a tidy income. Shame it's not invested back into the site.
Needs updating and not just relying on the assumption most will visit just once and not return or know no better.

We stayed on a touring pitch for a week with our caravan during a period of great weather - 2 adults and 2 young kids – great sandy beaches which we were on every day and in the sea with our wet suits – but the facilities and entertainment on the site were poor. Would I go back? I would to Dornoch to the other campsite but no way to Grannies Heilan Hame!!

Advantages

- Great Location with sandy beaches just at the end of the site – lovely Golden sand which is clean and tidy. The weather was very hot during our stay so we made the most of the day on the beaches and sea.
- Good area for walking and cycling – you can walk or cycle along the old railway to Dornoch which is a nice little village with some shops and cafes etc
- Within 3 miles you have some great beaches including some beaches where the seals are basking on the rocks and sand
- From a touring caravan point of view the pitches were level with good access to drainage and water facilities. Although a little close together the pitches were good and tidy. The shower and toilet facilities were of good standard but they became dirty very quickly because a large amount of people using them
- Good outdoor play park
- Well stocked shop

Disadvantages

- Swimming Pool - Firstly the pool was shocking!!! I was very surprised about the shabby worn interior – have to say it made my toes curl during changing. The pool itself is very small with steep stairs into it – times are limited and need to be booked. No Family or baby pool. We have visited the Parkdean site at Tummel Bridge and although this has a small pool it was very clean and had been obviously been renovated over the years. I can excuse the small pool but not the poor worn out surfaces. We drove an hour to the huge leisure pool in Inverness which was fantastic
- Enertainment Facilities – Very poor and not enough activities for kids. The main guy that was running the entertainment was very good but it was a one man show! The other entertainers or troupers were poor with no interaction with the kids. The daytime activites during the hottest days of the year comprised of a female entertainer sitting in the middle of the dance floor in the darkened bar colouring in!!! Surely common sense and experience would get you to set up outdoor games to take advantage of the weather – it was advertised as come and meet Sid and Lizzi (parkdean mascots) not once did these mascots interact with Kids and give a chance for photos or anything
- BAR – as mentioned by a previous contributor – the bar was out of stock for most of the week of Rose wine, Bottled Water and sparkling water
- Arcade – apart from tenpin bowling no real kiddies rides or games – mainly coin slot machines – not great for young kids
- Crazy Golf -- about 4 holes – not great!!
- STAFF – poor – no smiles – no interaction and looked unhappy to be at work. The 2 x female kids troupers were very poor

Overall a very poor experience. We would go back to the area – although the hot weather made a huge difference as not a lot else in the area to entertain kids in the area. Parkdean has no excuse for as the site was very busy and obviously bringing in a good income – they drastically need to re invest in the site – they are trying to be like Haven on a poor budget. AS mentioned earlier we have visited the Parkdean Tummel Valley site – although again poor entertainment it has good nice modern facilities.
I am more than willing to answer any questions on our experiences – I am just surprised and suspicious that there are not more comments from other people similar to ours!!

Room Tip: there is a caravn site right on the beach in Dornoch itself - I would suggest going there

Fourth time we have stayed at this site now, as my wife has family nearby. It is ideal for us as we take our pet beagle with us, and the walks along the gorgeous beach are fantastic, along with all the open spaces. The amenities are adequate enough ie. general store, arcade room, cafe/restaraunt, swimming pool, family bar and adults bar, kids play area etc. What i like is it's nice and laid back, unlike some i've been to in Scarborough etc. and never seems really busy! we managed to book for a swim for the next day every time (the pool is small by the way) hence the booking policy, that way it isn't too full!

Room Tip: If you have a pet be prepared, as the caravan quality does reflect this.

Good static van although a little small in places. The view from the window over the sea was wonderful - could sit and look at it all day. Good place for walks to Dornoch and travel up to John O'Groats.

I am very fortunate to rent a caravan privately at a very reasonable rate. We generally visit embo 5/6 times a year. This was our first this year. Grannies looks so tired, its dirty, they had run out of ice, coors light, rose wine, glenmorangie (the local malt whiskey). The prices had gone up """. The food was very pricey and a very limited menu and when receiving the food, it was so basic and luke warm. The customer service was very basic and seemed lacking in training. Such a shame the.entertainment.room has been done up but still miles.behind the times !!

Went here mostly to get away from it all. Was an excellant base for touring the highlands. We were lucky enough to have a caravan so close to the beach. Beach was amazing clean and the dog loved it. We never used thke facilities at the site but everything seemedwell maintained and run efficiently. Would definately go back xxx
