Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Bishopton
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 18, 2006

This is our second stay in Mar Hall. On both occasions we have stayed in a deluxe room and the standard of both has been first class.

The service has been nothing but friendly and efficient whether dealing in person, by email or telephone.

This time we ate in the restaurant and the food was stunning three courses and drinks for around £50 per head.

In the morning we went to the spa which is lovely we only used the pool but the gym looked very well equipped.

Breakfast was good quality and the service was great.

We have booked to stay at Christmas and we are looking forward to it.

Can't understand your previous reviewer's comments - we were pampered from the moment we set foot in this magnificent hotel on the banks of the Clyde. We found no need to 'spend a fortune' (we didn't) to get respectful service - being civil appeared to work perfectly well!

The setting, staff and facilities are outstanding and the Dining experience, eaten within the elegant yet intimate main Dining Room, was memorable (even if most of the offerings were slightly too 'fancy' for my simple taste).

The original building is wonderfully impressive, the restoration having been 'truthfully' carried out, but the new spa / swimming pool is sheer modern luxury. The bedroom was of the highest order and was very tastefully furnished.

Although the hotel appears, mainly, to cater for corporate hospitality and major functions they are equally well placed to offer overnight stay for weary travellers.

Will make a point of returning when next in the area.

If you plan on staying at this hotel I hope you don't have to deal with Jeanette Montgomery, the Operations Director. She was extremly rude to myself and my friends. If she doesnt think you are loaded and going to spend a fortune, she will make you feel like you don't belong there. Stay away, not worth the money

Stayed in October for our wedding anniversary.

Room was fantastic, room 7, four poster looking out over the water.

One thing I would say is that the TV is a bit small, not that you should be watching the TV on your wedding anniversary!

Service is good, food is OK but breakfast is self service and not really up to the mark when it comes to a country house hotel, they walk around with flasks of tea and coffee and you have to keep asking for a refill, a bit annoying when you need 4 cups of coffee to kick start you in the morning like I do.

The spa and leisure is out of this world, golf course opens next year which I cant wait for.

The two nights we were there had two larger parties, on the first night they had a group of medical reps who were quite loud, on the second night they had a wedding on and the music went onto midnight which was very loud.

I feel that the place leans on a lot of corporate trade and the individual travellers tend to be a bit forgotten.

Dont get me wrong, I loved the place and the attention to detail was superb, we will go back again.

The hotel is a very beautiful building with lovely views and grounds and the food was nice.
There was a useful iron and CD player/radio in the room but no tea/coffee-making facilities.

Although we had turned off the radiator before going to bed we were awoken by extreme heat from it in the small hours, even opening the window as wide as possible we were far from comfortable, and so I phoned reception. They informed me that the heating could not be turned down centrally.
We mentioned this when asked pleasantly by the receptionist. She didn't offer to take any action - just "Sorry to hear that, here's the bill"

I have given the hotel a low rating because nothing was done to rectify the problem. Although many things were good, being able to sleep is the most important and because this was in October in Scotland, so it's wasteful and doubly annoying - Have they never heard of saving energy?

We decided to stay at Mar Hall to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. The hotel is just beautiful and set in stunning grounds. The rooms are spacious and very well decorated and the staff couldn't do enough for us. We had dinner in the Cristal restaurant and it was absolutely wonderful. I visited the spa and found it to be a very tranquil experience. I couldn't fault this hotel at all and would recomend it to anyone.

A couple of times a year my girlfriends and I take a weekend break in a 5* hotel somewhere in Scotland however after meeting both the Operations and Marketing team at Mar Hall on a business trip it was easy to convince my friends that this was the place to go. It was only 20 minutes away from us instead of the usual 3/4-hour drive, so after a very stressful working week travelling was simple. The location, surroundings and peacefulness made us feel we were a million miles away from home. We arrived in time for a wonderful lunch in the Grand Hall accompanied of course with perfectly chilled white wine, during which time our overnight bags were delivered to our rooms. Our afternoon was spent indulging in some of the wonderful Aveda treatments and spending time relaxing by the pool and Spa. By the evening we were completely relaxed. Our evening began by have pre dinner drinks in the library, followed by a very relaxing diner in the restaurant, the ambience, food, wine (and water of course) together with the service was excellent. After diner we head to the bar for a night cap and to catch up on some girlie gossip about who we had saw having lunch next to us, and who was eating in the restaurant, who had the best treatment and compared Mar Hall with other places we had stayed. After a very sound sleep in our magnificent rooms we woke with the sun shining in the windows and marvellous views over the River Clyde, we head of for a swim before breakfast followed by a walk around the gardens. The hotel also boosts a small Gym, dance studio and hairdressing salon, despite the golf course not being completed and the gym not quite ready for opening we still had a wonderful time, okay it may be a little more expensive than other hotels but you only pay for what you get. We've have booked up already for a few celebrations this year, overnight stay included of course and some self indulgence, one point to remember it would be wise to book your treatments in advance, you will not be disappointed.
