Greeted with a friendly welcome by Jane and was given info on breakfast, booking for dinner etc. The bed was very comfortable and had a great nights sleep. Bathroom floor could have done with a vacuum but I am extremely fussy with cleanliness and the rest of the room was very clean. We had dinner which was made with very good quality ingredients but I would say they are ladies portions so if you are a man you would be advised not to go in hungry as my husband did and came out hungry! The only gripe with the restaurant is that it would be great if the volume on the music could be turned up a bit as everyone was speaking in hushed whispers so the other guests couldn't hear as it was pin dropping quiet! Background music alleviates this problem. Breakfast was superb, we both rated it the best breakfast in any hotel we have stayed in. The area is stunning.

Thanks for your review, and I'm glad overall you enjoyed your stay.

Portion sizes are of course a matter of individual taste, but I am surprised at your comments. We offer three menus. Our taster menu that describes itself as six small courses highlighting the best of Scottish fish, shellfish and game, so of course in this menu the portions are small. Our four course fixed price menu features contemporary Scottish food, and is designed to deliver exciting and unusual flavour combinations. If you choose only two courses, then of course you get less food and don't get the whole experience. Our third menu is our bar menu, and the waiting staff often complain about the weight of the plates they have to serve, so I don't think the portions there are in any way small.

Background music is also a bit of a personal choice, particularly with our very personal choice of music. We try to get a level that won't be offensive to anyone, but we won't get it right for everyone I'm afraid.

Alan Gibson

Excellent value for money. A warm welcome, outsanding 5 star food, comfortable and well presented room with a beautiful view of the loch and surrounding hills. Highly recommend Achray House Hotel for a weekend getaway or as a base for a longer stay. Allan and Jane were hard working and lovely hosts, and could not do enough for us.

Nice touches in the en-suite and room were the Arran toiletries, Brodie tea/coffee and Deeside shortbread. Also his and hers bathrobes.

The quality of the food was way above a 3 star hotel rating. I've already recommended it as a great place to stay to several friends and family. Will definitley book to stay if we visit the area again.

Room Tip: Pay a little more when booking for the full restaurant menu or the Taster menu and for a loch side v...

Good location, great views, great food ......... but if you want to have the Tasting Menu, then plan ahead and book it! We were having drinks and were offered the menu but not the Tasting Menu as others were offered. On asking for it, advised that we could not have it as we had not booked it in advance. We had booked online and then phoned to book dinner - no mention of having to pre-book the Tasting Menu. Advised that the information about booking is on the hotel website .... which indeed it is but that was not our vehicle for booking. It is not mentioned on the mobile version of the website which is what we used to make contact so our suggestion is that this is addressed. In fact, the kitchen did manage to accommodate us and after a short delay, we had the Tasting Menu ....... and it was excellent so well worth booking ahead. It's a bit odd and we have never come across this before with Tasting Menus in any restaurant.

Thanks for your positive review.

We do ask for advance bookings in the confirmation email we send to everyone who books. You initiated your booking on a third party web site where we don't have full control over the content on these, but I will try to get it amended to make it clearer that we need at least one's day's notice for the taster menu.

The reason for this is that we are a small restaurant in a hotel, which has a total of three menus, with only two chefs in the kitchen (or just myself two days a week). For the taster menu we need both to order the some ingredients, and prepare the more complex dishes, so we normally need a day's notice. Luckily on the night you stayed we were serving the taster menu to a number of customers, so had the necessary ingredients and were able to do it for you. I'm pleased we were able to do this, and that you enjoyed your meal.

Just back from a 3 night stay at this hotel. The views over the Loch were amazing. The taste and presentation of the meals were unbelievable. Allan and Jane the owners were always on hand to have a chat and give you advice on the great selection of Malt Whisky they have. We will try and have another visit back quite soon.

We were utterly gobsmacked at the view from our room over the loch. The room was large, airy and spotlessly clean. Nice Arran Aromatics toiletries gave it a wee touch of luxury as did the range of speciality hot drinks. The weather was kind to us so we were able to enjoy a cold wine on the lovely decking area at the front of the hotel. There really isn't much in the village but there doesn't need to be, the hotel itself would draw me back again. Great place, great food, great wee stay.

Thanks for your kind review.

As you say, the scenery is beautiful, and the village is very quiet, so we are very much a place to relax.

Hoping to see you again soon.

We arrived late and took opportunity to have special price. We were impressed by cozy lounge, nice rooms, bath (to be honest I did not notice that it took much time to fill it). There was good choice of food, whiskey and beer. I would recommend to stay in this hotel

A friendly welcome, a very spacious, clean and luxurious room with excellent ensuite and lovely views. Separate lounge with 2nd tv. Quality toiletries provided. Excellent walk in shower. Bath slow to fill but don't let that put you off as it is the size of 2 ordinary baths and is worth the wait (if other reviews are to be believed then we set a new hotel record of 35 minutes, plenty of time to enjoy a cup of tea)! Anyhow, the view of the loch and hills keeps you occupied for that time. The food for the evening meal and breakfast is exceptional. Regular dishes of venison and daily seasonal specials such as guinea fowl were expertly cooked. All food from breakfast was locally sourced and guests are told exactly where from which is nice. The staff are extremely friendly and professional. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, in case you couldn't guess. We stayed in the Dundurn Suite for DB&B.

Tips for other travellers Tip on local restaurants: don't go anywhere else. Do try the village shop for sandwiches etc if walking. All freshly made to order.
