Achray House Hotel & Lodges

We have stayed at Achray House twice this year. The hotel is lovely, set on Loch Earn with a beautiful view from all the public areas and most bedrooms. The owners are very friendly and helpful and make the hotel feel like a home-from-home.

We stayed this time in room 6 (Mountain View room) which had a huge comfortable bed, plenty of storage, flat screen TV and was very nicely decorated. The iron and ironing board were very handy!

The public rooms are gorgeous - there is an open fire, large comfortable sofas, a good selection of books and lots of board games so if the weather is not that great you can while away a good many hours watching the changing weather over the loch. There is also a patio area at the front of the hotel for nice days.

One of the best things about Achray House is the food. The menu changes daily and everything we had was excellent. Highlights for me were the black rice pudding and the seaweed panna cotta - good to get something a bit different and these were delicious.

The wine list is varied and has about 8 or 9 wines available by the glass. Prices were very reasonable and the bottle we had (Broken Shackle Red) was lovely. Husband was pleased with the selection of malt whiskies especially as they are served in a Glencairn glass.

Breakfast was excellent with a good selection as well as the standard 'full Scottish' - smoked haddock with poached egg and scrambled egg with smoked salmon are available. The toast is also worth a mention! Everything was well cooked and very tasty.

All in all we had a lovely relaxing time at Achray House and will undoubtedly be back.

Thanks for your generous review. One good thing about bad weather is the excuse to sit in front of the log fire in the lounge, which has had more use this summer than the terrace!

I'm particularly pleased that you enjoyed the food. Our contemporary style uses Scottish ingredients, but draws on techniques I have garnered over some thirty years of globe-trotting, so it does tend to be a bit different. The seaweed panna cotta is based on an old dish from the western isles of Scotland for carragheen pudding, and the black rice pudding comes from the traditional rice pudding of Thailand.

Looking forward to your next visit.

Stayed for a couple of nights towards the end of August. Accommodation was first class and the meals were excellent. The venison was cooked to perfection. I had a very good dinner at Nick Nairn’s place at Dunblane Hydro a couple of days earlier but the food at Achray House was even better. Excellent range of malt whiskies at fairly reasonable prices for 35ml measures. The proprietors were friendly and helpful. Only two improvements I can suggest. Replace one of the baths with a walk-in shower to create a fully disabled friendly room and stock a few more bottles of chilled quality Scottish beers! I would not hesitate to recommend Achray House Hotel for anyone wanting to treat themselves to a relaxing break with outstanding cuisine.

Thanks for your kind review, especially the comparison of our food to that of Nick Nairn.

On your suggestions, when we next refurbish the bathroom in the room your were in we will install a walk in shower. As to the Scottish beers, we stock those of our local brewery at Inverlamond, and have Bellhaven on draft, although we take this off in the summer months as it does not keep in warmer weather.

Went here for my grans 80th birthday, the hotel is lovely on the outside and the inside. As we had quite a big party we took over most of the rooms which was nice especially being able to celebrate a great occasion and not having to worry about disturbing any other guests. All staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food is very nice and a lot of variety to choose from, steak a big recommendation. The views are lovely too looking out onto loch earn, very peaceful area. All in all great place to visit and hope can again.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. Achray House has been popular for birthday celebrations this year, with groups celebrating 60th, 70th and 90th birthdays as well as your Gran's 80th.

Wishing you all well for the coming year, and hoping to see you again soon.

Just returned from a two night stay, as most people have already said the food here is fantastic, our room had a great view out towards the loch and surrounding mountains which was stunning, very handy for the local 9hole golf course aswell if you fancy a quick round, the owners and the staff too were lovely people where nothing seemed too much bother, very helpful, look forward to returning here again in the future.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 9, had great views

Thanks for your generous comments. The local golf course is a bit of a hidden gem: scenic but also challenging for a nine hole course.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Myself and husband stayed at Achray Housefor a couple of nights last week and I must say it was fabulous. Friends joined us for the second night and we had a lovely relaxing time. We had a beautiful room with fantastic views of the mountains and loch, worth going for in itself.
The dinner here is fantastic and breakfast wonderful, even forced a few bottles of wine down (not too much forcing) and reasonable priced too. The owners are a lovely welcoming couple they make you feel really comfortable and relaxed, its like home from home.
Look forward to going back next year, can't believe we have missed this little gem for all these years.

Room Tip: Book a lochview room, views are spectacular and so peaceful.

Found out about this wee place through a dinner, bed and breakfast deal on a daily discount site. Achray House looks out onto Loch Achray, and what an amazing view, so peaceful and picturesque.
Our room was large, in the eaves of the house, with a huge bed (take care when walking about in the dark, my husband hurt his leg on the sturdy wooden bedpost). The bathroom was ok, if a little dated, with Arran Aromatics toiletries.
I’d thoroughly recommend having dinner in the hotel – our 5 course tasting menu was delicious and far more creative than you’d perhaps expect from a place on the Scottish tourist trail. The owner, who was very friendly, mentioned that they choose the best local produce and you can really tell that they know and love the menus. Breakfast was similarly delicious, and in such a small place it was great to have it cooked to order rather than offered buffet-style.
Not much to do in the surrounding area but think it’s really popular for hunting, fishing and walking, going by the equipment we saw the other hotel guests carrying around, as we lazed around and ate!

Thanks for your generous review, especially your comments on the taster menu and the freshly cooked breakfast.

We are in a rural area (on Loch Earn, not Loch Achray despite the name of the hotel), and consequently are popular with people walking, cycling , fishing, hunting, shooting and doing all manner of water sports. We also host many golfers, playing golf at the village golf course or any of the 35 others within an hour’s drive. Whilst there are no shops (other than a small local store) or cultural venues in the area, it is an excellent centre for touring some of the best scenery in Scotland, and local attractions such as The Crannog Centre and Drummond Gardens are well worth a visit.

Of course, you also have the option to do nothing: it's a very relaxing area to chill out on for a couple of days as you did.

Alan Gibson

Had a really nice stay in June 2012- very comfortable room overlooking the loch- we had our small dog with us- lots of good walks nearby- beautiful location- an additional bonus was the excellent food - really good and the wine suggestions worked well with each course- and the best venison I have ever tasted- wonderful!! And superb home- smoked salmon- brilliant.

Very friendly owners and staff- we did'nt find the dining rooms or lounge too quiet and was nice to chat to other guests- the dog was not allowed in the public areas of the hotel which was fine for us (think she needed the rest after lots of walks!)

would thoroughly reccomend and would cerrtainly return!

Room Tip: go for a loch view
