“We will be back!”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

We booked 2 nights at Crieff Hydro to relax and recharge before we get married in 12 weeks time.

We arrived on the Friday night ,checked in and found our room no problem. We were thrilled at the size of the room and the bathroom. All decorated to a high standard. The views were great once the rain clouds disappered! The only slight issue we had with the room (114) was you could smell the cooking from the Meikle restuarant when the window was open and there was a lot of noise about 6.30am with vans and trollies. The shower was excellent with very high pressure and the bath was massive and big enough for 2 people.

We thorughly enjoyed breakfast both mornings however we were seated in the middle of about 7 familys on Sunday morning which did take the edge of as we couldnt hear ourselves think never mind talking to each other. But a wide choice and all very tasty!

We decided to go to the Victorian Spa on Saturday afternoon as the weather was so bad and we were disappointed to find there was a waiting list. We put our names down and just under 1 hour later we were called to say there was spaces. The spa is excellent and well worth £10 and once being there can appericate why there was a waiting list. The best thing is the peace and quiet and the ability to relax without kids making too much noise.

We didnt eat in the hotel but went to Avanti just on the High Street and the food was fanastic. We had a drink in the ballroom on the Saturday night but again the kids were having a great time and being a tad noisey as kids are so we retired to our room for drinks which was fine by us.

The hotel is great and if you had kids would be a great place to come as so much for them to do We dont have kids yet but would certainly bring them and we will definetly be back. People have complained about the kids but the hotel do try to accomadate adults only which is a real selling point. Yes there are lots of kids but what do you expect from a family resort.

After a recent disappointing stay in Dunblane Hydro we will most defintely be back hopefully sooner rather than later!

This hotel resort is in a lovely area with stunning views but is like a giant nursery with young children screaming everywhere.
Room was nice and spacious with lovely bathroom, view was onto car park though. We ate in the more casual restaurant having to working our way through buggies to our table, the food was pleasant, very tasty. Breakfast was a delight, the best part of the stay, fresh buffet and all the usual items with great service from waiters. The spa was a relaxing environment as it is adult only with jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, free cordials and tea to help yourselves.
A lot of activities to choose from (at a cost) but I cant comment as we didn't try any.

overall Very nice stay but not worth paying the full price.

My only beef was with the spa, I found the tiles needed cleaning and the floor was always wet around the bathroom area after paying £10 to get in one would expect a little better. also, upon returning in the afternoon there was no beds available to retire on. This might sound petty but it bothered me. Breakfast was excellent as was dinner, no complaints about the food or the staff for that matter.

So sorry that the Victorian Spa let down an otherwise perfect stay, haroldswick43uk. The Spa is very popular and can get busy at times when nearing our maximum 32 places. On a more positive note, we've deep-cleaned the areas you mentioned and are confident you'll find improvements all round on your next visit. Hope to see you again soon.

The Crieff Hydro hotel prides itself to be the longest existing registered trade in Scotland and started as a balneotherapeutic facility in the days of Queen Victoria. It has changed a bit since then, but has retained the ambience of a Victorian estate, which makes it a very interesting place to be (think bowling green, croquet, riding, golf of course and the buildings to go with that.

These days the hotel is a family-oriented activity resort offering a lot of different facilities, childcare, spa and a lot of sport, as well as the quite impressive Highlands landscape surrounding it. It is quite busy, so it might not be the right thing for people looking for quiet and solitude.

As accommodations, the hotel offers normal rooms, self-catering cabins and lodges and executive studios with catering. We had the later booked, which was a good solution for a two adults - two children group, as we could stay in one studio, while not having to bother with organizing food. The only funny thing was that the main bedroom only offered blackout blinds, and therefore a choice of either artificial lighting in a pitch black room or full visibility onto the outside. So bathrobes were a good thing to bring. With older children, a cabin would have been probably a better choice.

It offers two restaurants, the Meikle, which is a bit more on the posher end and the Brasserie, which offers a more relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast is typically included and is served as buffet service in the Meikle. Quality of the food is generally good, although the breakfast is maybe a bit on the greasy side. Especially for children, 6h of childcare are normally included, and extra packed lunch and high tea are offered inclusive. Our children quite liked that arrangement, saving them from having to sit through a three course meal.

The childcare in the separate and secured Big Country facility comes in three-hour blocks which can (and should) be pre-booked. This sounds very good, but comes with a few practicality traps. Our younger son (2 yrs old) was hardly capable of surviving two consecutive blocks, as he got tired beyond description, but no resting facilities are available. So we learnt to book two blocks morning and evening and giving him a mid-day nap opportunity. Our older son (5) was maybe a bit too old for the organized form of childcare on offer, but was too young to attend any of the numerous other activities on offer by himself. So he skipped a few sessions and negotiated a pool visit with me instead (the pool is nice, but a bit small during busy hours and offers an inflatable slide during family splash time).

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, both on the phone while arranging the trip and during our stay.

All in all, if you are looking for a fun trip for a familiy with a large choice of different activities, this hotel is a good place to go in a very pleasant environment.

Room Tip: The executive studios are self contained outside the main building with assigned parking spaces and...

We stayed mon-fri in a chalet with our 2 years old. We love the hydro, from the cosy chalet, to the excellent kids club. Loads for the wee one to do and time off for us when she is in the club. We will definitely return.

Few gripes:
No housekeeping in the 4 days and no new towels
We were advised the quad pods were suitable for our 2 year old, but they are definitely not. The quad took off with a bit of speed and all we could hear was our daughter screaming and the instructor just carried on instead of bringing her back. When they disappeared out of site this made us anxious and she was screaming when she returned. I would say they are for age 4 plus.
Brasserie is over prices, obviously because those on dbb have a £21.50 allowance so if the prices were lower they would have too much food to order but I feel this is unfair to those paying.. £12 for fish and chips?
Coffee is very poor

Overall we had a great time and staff are a credit

Ok, aged 41, on business, been to worse. 6 hour drive but great views!
Overall quite tired looking in need of new life. Full of families with rugrats. 1 lift for 3 floors! If weather is good great for walkers cyclists and golfers, but if its raining, then hope you have a good book!
Polite staff although some a bit soap shy, but excellent service and attitude from porters, in particular Donald.
Restaurant flatters to deceive, food in the ok bracket but suggest you try Gurkhas in the town.
If you don't like kids, do not visit the Bistro at tea-time, you will have to check in to the nearest asylum afterwards!
Oh yes, the coffee. Quite possibly the worst I've ever tasted, best stick with the beer!

It would seem churlish to pick at your review when it's clearly been written to help us, andi r, but I must point out that we've actually got 3 lifts. That aside, it's clear that this was not our finest hour - so sorry. As Scotland's Leading Family Resort, there's rarely a time when we're child-free, but we'll work on all the other areas you've highlighted. Hope you'll return someday.

Having travelled through Crieff dozens of times I have never visited the Hydro. Attended a two day business meeting where the service, facilities and food were excellent throughout. So good to see this level of service being offered in Scotland where we sometimes take the service and tourist industry for granted.
