“A great find”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

This was our 2nd visit to Barley Bree. The restaurant has a cosy snug area to have a drink before eating - great on a cold evening. The menu is short; often a good sign. I had West Coast Scallops for a starter, Ox cheek (main) and I've forgotten what I had for dessert (only 1 bottle of wine between 4 of us honest!). All 3 courses were good, the Ox Cheek has exceptionally good - very tender meat served with caramelised white cabbage - new to me. The food is good and is not fussy. The restaurant has a great atmosphere - quiet and informal - good for an evening with friends and suitable for a romantic meal too. The artwork in the restaurant is amazing - all the work of a local artist - Sam MacDonald. So - go there - eat there and see the art.

“beware all vegetarians”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

With so many positive reviews, you would think that this restaurant is sure to offer a great evening with a comfortable atmosphere, warm and authentic decor and especially the good food.
Well this may the case for meat eaters but as a vegetarian I was surprised at how poor the food was. The restaurants website states that it has a separate vegetarian menu ...it didn't . The menu offered didn't offer any vegetarian option in the main course and after having given advance notice on booking , I had to ask for the vegetarian option as this information was not being offered.
The starter was goats cheese panna cotta with fennel etc .The goats cheese was so overpowering you couldn't taste anything else on the plate and with such a soft texture from the pana cotta there was nothing to go with the cheese. The next course was as disappointing. The vegetarian sushi rice cake with broccoli and bean salad . The rice cake was fried and as a result was greasy and left a thick stodgy feel in your mouth . The bean salad? tasteless. Offer of pudding? No thank you , finished with coffee and petit fours which was the best course. Staff were pleasant but failed to ask at the end of each course whether the meal was enjoyed ...maybe the facial expressions said it all.
Over rated and overly priced.

“Good Crieff!, Muthill has an eaterie”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

The crew have visited a number of restaurants with rooms and we rounded off a meet with friends in Crieff by repairing to this one. This area could well be busy in about 18 months when the Ryder Cup comes to nearby Gleneagles and hungry golf addicts might be looking for a convenient bolt hole once the fairway stomping is over.
Our quality standard, of course, is Creggan House in Strathyre which had yet to be beaten in our travels, but everything leading up to our visit was promising. Good signage north and south of the village- off-street parking- historic atmosphere from an old coach house with artefacts from farming and peat cutting times gone by- and a promising Franco Scottish combination of food and drink with mine host Fabrice and his Scottish lady wife who were very welcoming.
The restaurant has 6 rooms of varying sizes- don't look for absolute luxury but they're functional and comfortable. Pre-dinner we met up for drinks in the lounge- loads of easy chairs and sofas and dead quiet. The wine list is extensive and the bar service was prompt. Prices are what you might expect.
Our table for 6 was in a cosy recess; the decor a mix of rustic, White&Co and John Lewis. The choreography in the kitchen must be first class- we couldn't believe how small it is.However in that place there is a lot going into the preparation of the food and whether its chicken, pork or beef the outcome is very good. Those of you expecting lots of fat chips might be disappointed but the quantity was fine overall. Post dinner we were back in the lounge for coffee and a small Drambuie or two before bed.
Breakfast in the morning after a sleep undisturbed by the Muthill High St night life was again high quality- the porridge came with cream and honey and the bacon was lean and full of flavour.
Did it beat Creggan? Not quite. But its up there

“Amazing Food, Staff, Restaurant”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

It was my wife’s 30th Birthday and I had contacted the restaurant to make reservations for a table of 10 on a Monday not realising the restaurant is closed on a Monday. 10 minutes later i was told that they would open the restaurant just for our group and lay on a 4 course set menu.

What can I say other than amazing in every area. We was made to feel very special by all the staff and nothing was ever to much trouble, the food was out of this world with fresh bread and some real fine dining dishes, for example our main was roast garlic barley risotto, slow roasted beef cheek with crispy tongue, pickled beetroot and salsify. Some reviews have said it’s a bit pricey but for this kind of gastronomy you should be paying 3x the price.

Thanks to the owner and staff for making my wife’s birthday a truly unforgettable experience

I cannot wait to return, my cousin is due up from London for Easter and I will be booking a table today.
