“Great for kids, we loved it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2011

Comrie Croft has spoilt us for future camping trips as anywhere else will have a lot to live up to! We were very lucky with the weather, so the children (aged from 3 to 9) were able to take advantage of the rope swings in the woods just above the lower meadow where we were able to choose our pitch. They literally went out first thing in the morning and we could keep an eye on them from our "base", only coming back when they were hungry.

The site was busy but there was plenty of space, including picnic tables which could be moved around. The rest of the people disappeared into the site very well, with all the different katas and tent pitches in the woods and higher meadow. The only time you realised it was busy was about 7pm / 9am when there was a bit of a wait for the showers.

As you are not allowed to drive onto the low meadow, there is a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to the car park, but it is worth it to have a "car-free" area to camp in.

Will be back!

A group of us camped for the weekend, staying in the High Meadow Pitch. The positives were the great views and the ability to have campfires with suitable firepits. This led to some great chat and marshmallow toasting experiences. The campshop was reasonably well stocked and there was a self service coffee bar which some of our group enjoyed.

The negatives were the trek down to the toilet and washblock, which was also the only place to get drinking water and the poor quality and quantity of toilets and showers. The site makes a big deal out of 'eco-camping' and I am happy to recycle all my rubbish in the designated containers but 'eco' showers, meant limited hot water, poor lighting and dirty flooded out floors .

The site is for tents only. There are lots of notices asking people to respect other campers and for quietness after 11pm. That is all fair enough. However, on the Saturday night there was a wedding party going on in the lodge which is also part of the site - and the music there was still pounding its beat at 3 in the morning!!

The site was expensive for the facilities available but if you like your camping rough and rural then this may well be for you. Would I go there again? Possibly, given that I would now know what to expect.

Room Tip: Don't forget the midgie repellent!!!

CrofterAndrew, Owner at Comrie Croft Eco Hostel & Camping, responded to this review, July 13, 2011
Thanks for your feedback. We actively seek feedback and do our best to respond positively if guests don't have a great time. On this occasion we didn't live up to our own standards - if the reviewer is able to contact me then I'd be very happy to offer a goodwill gesture. Looking at the specifics:

- The walk from the High Meadow to the facilities: This takes about 2 minutes, but perhaps wasn't emphasised enough on our website. We've now made it clearer. Presently vehicles are allowed to the edge of the High Meadow for drop-off and pick-up at the beginning and end of your stay. We are planning a free 4x4 or horse-drawn cart pick-up and drop-off service and to build a compost loo and solar-heated shower next to the High Meadow to be operational in 2012. We do offer a choice of camping areas and if convenience is key then we always recommend the Low Meadow area which is located next to the facilities.

- Quality/quantity of the shower/toilet facilities: Unfortunately when the weather is not great (most of this summer so far) it is virtually impossible to keep the shower area clean 100% of the time. We do our best to get in as often as guest use will allow. The number of showers/toilets complies with the VisitScotland standard for 3* facilities, but we do recognise that at the peak time in the morning demand for showers can outstrip supply and hence we plan to build facilities up the hill for 2012. We also recognise that the lighting quality in the shower area has been variable, due to the solar/wind power system this operates from. As a result of your feedback we are installing an extra storage battery and have already doubled the number of lights - it is much, much better! We are also planning to install an inline pump to maintain the water pressure at peak times - so that hot and cold water are fully available.

- Noise. 99% of the time Comrie Croft is a peaceful rural haven. This particular wedding group broke our own rules and unfortunately our enforcement wasn't up to scratch for which I'm sincerely sorry. Since your stay we have significantly tightened up our noise policy (and how we make sure people comply). We have also posted on our website dates when slightly more noise than the usual birdsong can be expected.

I hope that we'll see you again another time.

Employee-owned business; very eco friendly
An excellent place to camp - and you can have a proper campfire :-)))
TRANSPORT - car park; good bus service to nearest towns (No 15 Perth service - doesn't take bikes sadly) (stops right at bottom of a slightly step drive)
STAFF - very friendly, experienced, diverse and helpful (George is excellent at bushcraft)
ACCOMODATION - hostel, Swedish Katas (huge tepee-type tents); 3 types of pitches: lower meadow, higher meadow and woodland (latter is the best for tarp/hammock, teppees, smaller tents and learning bushcraft skills)
FIRE - can have camp fire (FAB!!); huge bag of wood £5 (lasted 1-2 nights depending)
ABLUTIONS - good; unisex
WASHING UP - decent sized sinks
WASTE - excellent recycling area (very organised) with area to leave unused / surplus items for other campers (great idea)
FACILITIES - (1) Shop - very basic consumables (they need to expand or provide mobile delivery so do not have to get into car and go nearest town); has some emergency outdoor kit too (good idea); has bike parts / kit
(2) Communal social area (an old parachute with camp fire; great idea); (3) Small function hall; (4) Communal computer (mainly for international travellers); (5) 24hr drinks / snacks shed; (6) chicken pen - great fresh eggs and kids can feed (7) Views - panoramic; (8) information board with activities, reources and weather info
ACTIVITIES - (1) fab walks on site (water falls; pond, woodland, hills; higher mountains short drive away; (2) mountain biking (local hire available) + tracks; (3) other visitor attractions short drives away; (4) natural osprey nest across the road; (4) loads of birds and some wildlife
NEAREST TOWNS - one either side, about 10min drive or 20 mins on bus

Room Tip: Pitch No 11 - great view, but liable to flooding

Stayed two nights camping in the top meadow. Clean, spacious site with good facilities and in a spectacular setting in the valley.

Excellent idea and very well executed site. Nice touches in the details of woodwork and layout, friendly and informed staff and generally a neat and well maintained centre. This is a great model to emulate as it gives people options depending on their circumstances and weather. It's a great example of how you can keep a site clean and tidy without sterilising it with block work toilets and concrete pitches. One of the finest places to stay in the area and i hope it continues to keep it's modest profile. I didn't stay in the bunkhouse as i camped in the woods, so i'll try and book in for next time. Good work.

Have stayed at the campsite a couple of times and have always loved the stay. Our first time in the bunkhouse was very good, clean and warm bedrooms with good ensuite shower. The kitchen is very well stocked with equipment and basic condiment and tea & coffee. Over all a great stay was had by all.

we were initially thinkn of camping for the 1st time..but decided to stay in the bunkhouse and have a look at the camping facilities whilst we were there..camping looks gr8, which we will def try next year..the bunkhouse was gr8, had private room with ensuite..used the shared kitchen facilities, which was also gr8 area for meeting other people...there is loads to do in this area. we found 2 days wasnt enough, there4 tried to book with a group of friends 4 sept wk/end, unfort its fuly booked. will def be back nxt year and mayb do 5-7 days..nothing was any bother for the staff, who were all friendly and helpful. i would def recommend even if only for 1 night.
