“Lovely house and welcoming host”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

I stayed here in February and arrived to a truly warm welcome from the owner. The house was clean, comfortable, and quiet stunning in its understated charm. The location is just perfect to explore Westray and has unrivaled views across the bay. My room was relaxing and homely. One of those unexpected gems that occasionally pop up when travelling.

After a wet, blustery day walking round Westray I didn't much mind what sort of B&B I stayed in so long as it was warm and had tea available. No 1 Broughton is up to the mark on both scores and much more besides. Situated right at the sea's edge the views over the bay are wonderful and the interior is very well decorated and spotlessly clean. The room was large and very comfortable, with a separate area to sit. Tea and coffee making facilities were good (fresh milk in the fridge on the landing) and there's wi-fi if the urge to check what's happening in the rest of the world gets too much.
Breakfast was excellent too - everything very well cooked and tasty, especially the porridge. The host was really friendly and made us very welcome. I'll definitely stay here next time I'm over. I can't think of any negatives at all.

This establishment normally offers bed and breakfast but the owner had tried to let it as self catering. It is too big for many families but suited us, even if we had to make our own breakfast. In Kirkwall we saw this house advertised for sale so it may either disappear as a B&B or be under new ownership in the near future.

First impressions, right on the sea front, lots of seaweed and some sand and gravel, seals idling about and lots of birdlife, ruddy turnstones very active. Attractive views in a quiet location.

Inside - spotlessly clean, polished wooden floors, leading one to automatically take off shoes, there were slippers in our rooms. Overall impression was of light and airiness.

Bedrooms of variable but generous size. Very comfortable beds, with an electric blanket, nice to pre-warm the bed because even in August we had morethan one day with little sun and temperatures of only 14C. The ensuite bathroom to my first floor room was spacious in floor area but the ceiling is sharply sloped and even at 5 ft 7 inches, I fould it easy to bang my head when in the shower, a taller person might find this a real problem and might benefit from asking for a different room.

There are very few street lights in Pierowall but unfortuanately there is one just outside of the window of one of one room, which created more light in the room than desired.

Self catering for dinner was reasonably easy but we knew there were few shops and did bring supplies from a super market in Kirkwall, before catching the ferry to Westray. Topped up at local shops, there are two in Pierowall. Wonderful fish and chips from "Jacks" a short walk away, they are open Wednesday and Saturday and do fish such as Tusk, and megrim that we seldom or never see in London.

Definitely a good place to be.

Room Tip: Note comments about sloping ceiling in some bathrooms. If you want to see Puffins on the island make...

This is a lovely house with very comfortable rooms which are full of charm. Great facilities and very friendly and helpful owner. The views from the lounge/sun room are gorgeous and it's a short walk to the local hotel for evening meals. The local fish & chips also does takeway a couple of times a week. The house and rooms are very tastefully decorated. As noted in one other review, you may hear the guests in other rooms moving about but this is very faint, not disturbing and no more than you would expect in a older house. This is a great place to get away from it all but still with easy access to facilities such as restaurant/bar/swimming pool and a couple of craft shops. It's suitable for visitors who do not have their own transport but still want to feel as if they are staying in a remote place.

Had the pleasure of spending a night at No. 1 Broughton and what a treat! Beautiful room overlooking the bay with seals outside the window for good measure! Breakfast was delicious sat around the table sharing experiences with other travellers. A wonderful place to relax and get away from it all with a great host (Jerry) who really looked after us....

Room Tip: Ask for the front double room overlooking the bay

When we arrived, the landlord (Jerry) wasn't around, but had left a note on the door explaineng where the room and tea/coffee was, and to just make ourselves at home. Very easily done as the b&b has a really "homey" atmosphere. Clean, well looked after and air of someone taking pride in the place, it was a real find as we hadn't originally planned spending the time on Westray - glad we did. Our room was large with a view over the harbour which was just hypnotic as the sun set. So was watching the seals just outside the window as they jostled for space as the tide went out. the conservatory was very open and bright, a cracking place to have a cracking breakfast - not the biggest but definately one of he best.
Location is excellent, but Pierowall's a small place so it would be be hard not to have an excellent location.
Jerry's a really nice bloke, friendly and helpful but not intrusive. He's also a talented artisit, i would take the time to browse some of his pictures, they're bargains.
Also ask about graham's Wetraak Tours

Room Tip: Try for a harbour view check out Jerry's art

Our room was very spacious and was a really lovely, a nice mix of antique with traditonal set off with Jerry's wonderful art, very tasteful . The house has a gorgeous position overlooking the coast where the seals regularly loll about or frolick in the water, so it was a pleasure to return back each day to watch these from the chairs in the bedroom whilst having a cuppa and a biscuit. Breakfasts were delicious with excellent home made breads and muffins together with a beautifully cooked choice - with plenty of choices of cereals and choices of fruit compotes/salads. The local inn The Pierowall Hotel - just a 10 minute pleasant stroll away, served excellent food on all four nights that we ate there - the portions were more than adequate, there was plentiful menu along with a blackboard menu of wonderfully freshly caught fish and very good puddings. The lemon cheesecake was the best ever.
Alll in all a perfect stay on Westray - No. 1 Broughton having such a good position with great views - a perfect island retreat. Very special. We would love to return one day as we thoroughly loved the pace and relaxed way of life on the island.

Room Tip: The king sized double overlooking the shore was just lovely.
