The family room here is really lovely. En suite, sea view, friendly staff, clean. Sanday is abundant in white unspoilt sandy beaches. Great for 2-3 nights. They do take away fish and chips in a Saturday night. The local pub does it wed night. It's close to a community shop and petrol station.

Room Tip: The family room is great. 1 single, 1 double with 1 single bunk bed. En suite. Sea view.

We stayed for 8 nights at the beginning of august having booked the hostel for exclusive use for the 6 of us. This must be the only wheelchair accessible place to stay on Sanday, although its a bit of a tight squeeze at times its fine for wheelchairs as long as your are not really tall or really wide!! Anyway the accomodation is great. Clean and well maintained with a nice garden area at the front, and sunsets at the back. A roll in shower at one end and an en suite at the other. Comfy beds and internet access, I can say no more. this comes highly recommended with lovely helpful hosts as an added extra. We shall be back!

Dear reviewer
We strongly disagree with your comments if you are Kevin who missed the boat and plane to get off the island and who could not get any accommodation due to all accommodation on the island being full. When you phoned we told you we were also full and tried to help you in a very tight spot by providing you with a evening meal and breakfast the next morning you did not mention you were unhappy we understand how frustrated you were in missing your boat but as you see from our other reviews your comments do not match up with others. Our caravans are ageing but clean

Sanday has been described as the jewel of the Orkney Islands. Ayres Rock has to be part of that jewel too, even though it doesn't have the high polish some expect. My hosts were extremely helpful and informative when I arrived and for the duration of my stay.
I was the single occupant of a caravan which was well equipped and clean. To be fair nothing is in its first flush of youth but the value for money is fantastic and the view from the caravan is something to behold. The Sanday community seems to be working hard to bring sustainabilty to the Island, there is a great tourist leaflet available at the Hostel and it seems the Ranger works hard to organise trips. There is a small craft shop which is open when the owners are there and i can imagine this enterprise developing in the coming years along with the Tourism association on Sanday.
many thanks

We didn't stay in the hostel but were the only occupants of the converted barn, which has beds, electricity, hot water. A great alternative to camping. Used the campers' kitchen in the caravan, unfortunately we weren't there the right night for fish and chips. The owners seemed very friendly and helpful. Only one shower in the ablution block but when we were we seemed to have it more or less to ourselves, and the shower was terrific.

The Ayre´s Rock hostel is situated overlooking a beautiful bay on the isle of Sanday in the Orkney Isles, easy access to walking grounds from here. The drawback, it is quite out of the way from anything, so even to get to the local shop a car is required!
The room was well equipped with a comfortable bed, unfortunately only a window in the roof, that couldn´t be opened.
The kitchen was adequately equipped, but some of the pots and cuttlery were a bit dirty.
The Ayre´s Rock also offers Fish & Chips Takeaway on Saturday nights, which was really tasty and a nice crafts shop with a variety of locally produced crafts.
In a nutshell, a good place to stay and good value for money!
