Really disappointing. Booked this as a luxury middle to a camping holiday. £110 pounds per night, per room with breakfast included. On arrival at 17.30 nobody available to check us in so a member of bar staff found our key (very friendly, advised us someone would some to see us to give us a form to fill in and give us information - this did not happen and I had to go and find someone later to ask about breakfast). Although the rooms have been refurbished and are very nicely decorated this is basically a pub with rooms above. Details are lacking - the room is nicely decorated but the kettle in the room is old, cheap and horrible, shampoo in sachets (stayed in a hostel the night before that had better facilities!). Breafast was disappointing too, basic (canned tinned fruit, boxed cereals, full scottish but just bog standard, not advertised as local produce and did not appear anything special), breakfast service pretty gloomy too to be honest. The main complaint we had was the noise in the rooms. On booking I was told that the rooms could be noisy if theyre was a live band on, I was offered a room away from the noise and requested this. On arrival our designated room was above the bar. There was a band in a function room opposite on the same floor as our room and a party in the bar. We went out for dinner and were out till midnight. On return the party was still going on and noisy but it was a saturday night and everything quietened down about 01.00. On the Sunday there was a live band all afternoon. Very loud when we arrived back at 17.30 and singing out of tune, painful. This stopped just after 18.00 to be followed shortly by loud dukebox selections from the bar below. We asked for this to be turned down twice - once about 22.30 and once just before midnight. It was turned down but could still hear it in the room. Please don't waste your money on this hotel - if it was £70 per night per room with breakfast it might be worth a punt but I have stayed in amazing hotels on small islands for £100 a night with exceptinal service and quality food and sure you can find much better on Orkney. Getting back to camping the night after was a total relief!

Room Tip: If you do stay here after reading my review, request a room on the top floor at the back or in an an...

Travelling in a group of 10 walkers we booked these rooms with the information that their price had gone up because the rooms had been refurbished. Sure enough they were and quite nicely done, but a shelf in the en-suite would have been nice.
However some of the rooms did not have wardrobes as they "hadn't arrived yet" and the one in my room was obviously not new. Clothes rack were provided in the other rooms.
To be fair the rooms were nice and the beds comfy and clean. They had new flat screen TVs and the breakfast was good apart from the sausages which were a bit "Tesco Value". And the service in general was good.
But one person had to cancel four weeks before we travelled and there was no refund on the deposit, which in itself is understanable, but I told them twice on the last night I would be alone as my wife was leaving a day early, but they still charged the full double room rate, and with no wardrobes in some rooms I would have thought a little flexibility on their part would not have gone a miss. There was no compromise at all when it came to their rates.
I booked for the middle of May knowing that this is still relatively quiet in Orkney so 10 people for four nights was good business for the Hotel.

Room Tip: Stromness is a small but charming town, but many locals like a drink on a Friday and Saturday night...

Went here recently for a celebratory meal to try and make up for the disappointing experience the previous week at the Ferry Inn in Stromness. Unfortunately not all the items advertised on the menu on their website were available despite having been assured they were when we booked. However that said the whole experience was far better than the Ferry Inn. The decor was warm and inviting with plenty of interesting information relating to the Hudson Bay company. The food was well presented and in the Orkney cheesecake you could both see and taste large pieces of fudge. Service was attentive and when we expressed concern that the full menu as advertised wasn't available the manageress came out from the back and explained why this was. Will definitely return and look forward to the North Ronaldsay Lamb and Cranacan next time.

I usually stay here on business trips to Stromness. It is excellent. The rooms are clean, warm and spacious. Food is lovely. It's a very short walk to Stromness Harbour and in a fine location. Highly recommended.
