Owner description: The Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae, near the dramatic white beach of the Bay of Skaill, is one of the best preserved groups of prehistoric houses in Western Europe. Uncovered by a storm in 1850, the attraction presents a remarkable picture of life around 5,000 years ago. Visitors can experience a prehistoric village and see ancient homes fitted with stone beds, dressers and seats. A replica construction allows visitors to fully understand the interior of a prehistoric house.

This is one of the reasons we came to the Orkney islands. This was a settlement by the sea that over time became covered by sand. It was uncovered in 1850. The preserved neolithic homes which were connected by tunnels can be viewed from above. Homes look like they might have been with the artifacts and sleeping boxes still in place. There is a nice gift shop and café in the visitor center.

We were lucky to have a personal guide who loves the Orkney Islands. The rich history of this world renowned UNESCO site was well worth the rainy day visit. Happy to see the preservation of world history.

This is a really interesting site. A pity our weather deteriorated to rain as well as wind and we ended up soaked! We were on a tour from a cruise ship berthed in Kirkwall. Our guide told us a lot about the history at Skara Brae. There is an overcrowded information centre with cafe, souvenir shop, toilets. Adjacent to the Skara Brae site is the Skaill House, a 17th century manor house. Orkney exceeded our expectations and if you visit here Skara Brae should be on your must see list.

This was a stop on the day trip through the Orkney Isles and we were fortunate that our driver Martin was also a registered guide. With the limited time available we hadn't time to take in the interpretive center and the dig site so Martin's knowledgeable insights were very beneficial. The tale of the discovery of the site and the archeological value are interesting but it is also a nice spot to enjoy a nice sunny hour or two.

I clearly remember how transfixed I was as a 12 year old pupil history pupil learning about Skara Brae for the first time. Since then (almost 50 years ago!) I have always wanted to visit the site. I was super impressed with what I saw and the marvellous work that has been done to preserve the site for future generations. This truly is a wonder of the archaeological world and is a must see for anyone visiting Orkney.
