Owner description: The Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae, near the dramatic white beach of the Bay of Skaill, is one of the best preserved groups of prehistoric houses in Western Europe. Uncovered by a storm in 1850, the attraction presents a remarkable picture of life around 5,000 years ago. Visitors can experience a prehistoric village and see ancient homes fitted with stone beds, dressers and seats. A replica construction allows visitors to fully understand the interior of a prehistoric house.

Go: that’s all I am going to say. Okay, maybe not. It’s such a well preserved heritage site, the interpretation is well done and I had the best bowl of Cullen skink, ever.

We visited this location on our tour of the Highlands and found it to be not only unique but educational. These ruins are very well preserved, although unfortunately the sea is encroaching. We were lucky enough to have a very interesting guide who filled us in on what is known about the ruins and the area.

Skara Brae is the 3rd part of our journey back in time in Orkney. After visiting Stenness and Brodgar, we went to this prehistoric settlement area. We first went to a replica of a house which was used by man during this time. It was made of flat stones piled one on top of each other.

The village near the coast is said to be the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Western Europe and older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge A storm in 1850 unearthed the houses in this settlement. One can walk around the different houses in the village. Information can be found in every section. Stone furniture, dressers and beds can be found. The houses were built below ground in order to protect the inhabitants from the harsh weather conditions of Scotland. A good day to see how pre-historic man lived.

Reaching Skara Brae required considerable commitment. A horrifically expensive ferry crossing over to the Orkneys and then almost a complete lack of signage to the site made it incredibly difficult to access! However, it was well worth the effort. Entry prices were very reasonable and included a very interesting introductory museum, an impressive replica structure and the Neolithic archaeological site itself. The site is incredibly well preserved and friendly staff are on hand to answer any questions. A wonderful experience.
