We recently spent 3 nights at the Burnside Farm and enjoyed every aspect of our stay. The location is convenient to all locations on Mainland you may want to visit and within Stromness itself, it is near the center of town but outlying enough to be peaceful and quiet. It sits atop a hill overlooking the harbor and town providing beautiful morning views upon waking. Add to that the charm of being on a farm with dairy cows grazing nearby and the setting is bucolic and restful. We stayed in the Scapa view room which was lovely and with no exaggeration had the most comfortable bed we encountered on our two week tour of Scotland. The bed linens and towels were luxurious and the room was replete with little amenities such as delicious shortbread, chocolates, coffee/tea maker, etc. Bathrooms were modern and immaculate. Best of all was the smell of Joy's home baked bere bannocks she made daily. Heavenly! Wonderful breakfast whether the full Scottish or smoked Haddock and eggs. Her porridge was delicious, even my husband, who never eats oatmeal at home, enjoyed it!! And the fresh berries every morning were of the best quality. We would definitely stay here again on any return trip to Orkney.

Room Tip: Scapa view room was lovely and had views of the water from both the front and side windows.

The B&B was very accessible and tho we drove it seems it would be an easy walk from the Stromness ferry dock. Our room was up an easy flight of stairs, it was a good size room and full of amenities, like being able to adjust your heat yourself. The bathroom was great, with a showerhead that does not skimp on water. We had the full cooked breakfast and it was very good, especially like the meats from the butcher. We did go all out on eating the shortbread in our room too, very tasty.

We spent only one night at Burnside B&B but it was lovely. The room felt just like we were staying at grandma and grandpa's place complete with doilies. The bathroom was modern with an excellent hot shower and all the amenities of a first class hotel. The bed was very comfortable and the entire place spotless. In the morning we were greeted with the largest breakfast we've ever had in our four years of Scottish B&Bs. First off we had cheese made from the dairy cows from the farm along with fresh bannocks. There was fresh butter, also from the same cows, and full cream (a rarity in Scotland from my experience) for my coffee. There were loads of fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals and then came the porridge and a full Scottish breakfast. We could barely roll out of there. Super friendly host (thank you, Joy) who was just a friendly as can be and welcomed us into her home and farm. We had the Scapa View room which I highly recommend.

Room Tip: Scapa View overlooks Scapa Flow and Stromness. Excellent bathroom!

This is a well appointed small B&B. Lovely bathrooms, sumptuous bath and bed linen and comfortable beds. Joy goes out of her way to ensure you get the most out of your visit. We arrived off the ferry from Lerwick at about 11.30 pm and she still welcomed us at that hour! Can highly recommend. An added bonus is its proximity to such attractions as Maeshowe and Skara Brae.

Room Tip: one of the bedrooms is not ensuite, but it does have a lovely bathroom next door. Don't see thi...

We had such a wonderful time at the Burnside Farm; the views were excellent, the beds were soft and comfy, and I even got to watch cows being milked! (a big thing for a suburb girl). Our bathroom was beautifully modern, and the bedrooms have all those quaint details you would expect from an old farmhouse B&B. I could have lived there. Next time we go, we will stay longer. Thank you for such a great stay xo

We stayed five nights at Burnside Farm, and they were the most comfortable of our first three weeks in the UK. The Scapa View room looks out over Scapa Flow and Stromness, well furnished, very comfortable and with a fantastic bathroom (roomy, good water pressure for a nice hot shower).

We were greeted with tea and home made treats, and provided with a wealth of local tourist information. The farm is a short walk from Stromness with several reasonable eateries for dinner, and close to the World Heritage Neolithic sites.

Joy provides a great breakfast spread chock full of local produce including cheese and butter made from the farm's milk, fresh eggs and home made bread. We never needed more than a light lunch after a filling breakfast at the farm.

We have stayed at some very good B&Bs in the UK but Burnside Farm is the best so far on this trip. Highly recommended for couples visiting The Orkneys.

I don't know if I can add anything to what others have already said about Joy, Robbie and Burnside farm but I will have a go.

we had a fantastic time with Joy and Robbie.

we arrived to be greeted with home made cake and a very warm welcome from Joy. She loaned us books about Orkney and told us about places to visit and lots of local info (pubs with no windows!) and gave us the wifi code. she also gave us a list what we could choose for breakfast and offered to chill any wine we bought so we could enjoy drinking it in the sitting room on an evening. We immediately felt at home.

Our room was fantastic, we stayed in Hoy which was en suite with had a huge bed (with The White Company bedding) that was very comfy. our room also had home made shortbread biscuits that melted in your mouth and chocolates along with 2 bathrobes (take note Holiday inn), shower cap and hair dryer as well as tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk if we wanted it, and other thoughtful bits and bobs.

the en suite shower room was very modern, contemporary and came complete with very nice Scottish milk toiletries. the shower was huge and the most powerful one I have ever been in, plenty of hot water too, no worries about running out here.

All immaculately clean and fresh!

Breakfast was all home made and freshly cooked to order, stewed rhubarb or fresh red berries along with yoghurt, cereals, proper porridge and a full Scottish breakfast with home made bread, bere bannocks and preserves - Joy is a busy lady. The butter and cheese made from milk from their cows was delicious. we really liked sitting at one big table and chatting to the other guests.

On an evening after we had been out for dinner we used to sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the sitting room and chat to Joy and Robbie which was much nicer than just being sat in your (admittedly lovely) room

By the end of our stay we felt like we were staying with friends and we were incredibly sad to leave, it's spoiled us for staying in other places, I don't think we would have had better service or food at a 5 star hotel.

nothing was too much for Joy, and she goes the extra mile to make sure her guests are well looked after and comfortable. It's that attention to detail that makes this place so special.

if Heniken did bed and breakfasts this would be it.

The only downside as far as we are concerned is that its so far away from where we live, if it was closer we would visit a few times a year.

Room Tip: all the rooms were lovely
