I don't know if I can add anything to what others have already said about Joy, Robbie and Burnside farm but I will have a go.

we had a fantastic time with Joy and Robbie.

we arrived to be greeted with home made cake and a very warm welcome from Joy. She loaned us books about Orkney and told us about places to visit and lots of local info (pubs with no windows!) and gave us the wifi code. she also gave us a list what we could choose for breakfast and offered to chill any wine we bought so we could enjoy drinking it in the sitting room on an evening. We immediately felt at home.

Our room was fantastic, we stayed in Hoy which was en suite with had a huge bed (with The White Company bedding) that was very comfy. our room also had home made shortbread biscuits that melted in your mouth and chocolates along with 2 bathrobes (take note Holiday inn), shower cap and hair dryer as well as tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk if we wanted it, and other thoughtful bits and bobs.

the en suite shower room was very modern, contemporary and came complete with very nice Scottish milk toiletries. the shower was huge and the most powerful one I have ever been in, plenty of hot water too, no worries about running out here.

All immaculately clean and fresh!

Breakfast was all home made and freshly cooked to order, stewed rhubarb or fresh red berries along with yoghurt, cereals, proper porridge and a full Scottish breakfast with home made bread, bere bannocks and preserves - Joy is a busy lady. The butter and cheese made from milk from their cows was delicious. we really liked sitting at one big table and chatting to the other guests.

On an evening after we had been out for dinner we used to sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the sitting room and chat to Joy and Robbie which was much nicer than just being sat in your (admittedly lovely) room

By the end of our stay we felt like we were staying with friends and we were incredibly sad to leave, it's spoiled us for staying in other places, I don't think we would have had better service or food at a 5 star hotel.

nothing was too much for Joy, and she goes the extra mile to make sure her guests are well looked after and comfortable. It's that attention to detail that makes this place so special.

if Heniken did bed and breakfasts this would be it.

The only downside as far as we are concerned is that its so far away from where we live, if it was closer we would visit a few times a year.

Room Tip: all the rooms were lovely

I can't really say much more about Burnside that hasn't already been said. Suffice to say, it was excellent in every respect. I particularly enjoyed the smoked haddock for breakfast, and the shortbread biscuits in the bedroom just melted in the mouth. Joy's local knowledge and painstaking attention to detail were all very much appreciated. We had a lovely large ensuite double bedroom with outstanding views across Stromness harbour to Hoy.

Our room was lovely, we weren't en-suite but the bathroom was just next door and it was very clean and modern. It wasn't like staying in a b&b, more like a hotel. Breakfast was also great with a fabulous view. Joy and Robbie were very welcoming, I would highly recommend Burnside Farm.

A wonderful warm welcome from Robbie and Joy. This is a truly amazing B&B - super breakfast with a great view of the harbour. Fantastic modern bathroom and a really comfortable bedroom with everything you need plus Joy's amazing home-made shortbread. Thank you both for a terrific stay.

Room Tip: Hoy View and Scapa View have the edge.

We have just returned to Kent having spent 3 magical days with Joy and Robbie at Burnside Farm. The hospitality was warm and friendly, the bedrooms were fantastic and the bathrooms even better ! The breakfasts were absolutely superb and there was nothing that Joy wouldn't do to ensure her guests were happy; this included tips on where to eat in Stromness, places to visit on Orkney and, even, the weather forecast for the day ahead.

We also picked Burnside because it was rated #1 on Trip Advisor. Sometimes reviews are mixed but these are universally positive ... and correct! Wonderful place with great views. It's definitely worth paying extra for the view rooms even if you think you won't spend much time inside. All the little details have been thought of. Orkney is absolutely fascinating and this is the best possible base.

Room Tip: It is worth paying the small extra price for a room with a view.

Burnside is a working farm on the edge of Stromness. It's a peaceful place and boasts a herd of beautiful cows shepherded by an intelligent, patient dog. Our bedroom had a view over the town and beyond to Hoy. Two great features deserve mention. One is the luxurious bathroom with a shower you won't want to leave. The other is the white crispness of sheets fresh from an Orkney gale. It was hard to leave this room in the morning but worth it for a five star breakfast. It's all the little touches... perfectly cooked fresh laid eggs, local and farm produce, home baked bere bannocks, the size and sweetness of the fruit. Joy is an unflappable, kind hostess.
