Burnside Farm

Just got back from Orkney and a 5 day stay at Burnside Farms. It was great and we'll stay there again if and when we are next in Orkney. Joy and Robbie were very welcoming, our room was extremely comfortable (with a great view) and the breakfasts were tasty and filling (cold to start and cook-to-order to follow). Very much a come-and-go as you please kind of place.

I was concerned prior to our trip that this B&B was just starting and that it was on a dairy farm. Both concerns were unfounded; Joy is working hard at making this an excellent B&B and any noise, etc. from the dairy farm were non-existent. Joy even had breakfast available for us with an early ferry departure om our last day; we ate in the kitchen and felt like we were family. It's a 15 minute walk from Stromness which is a very pleasant little town (much quieter than Kirkwall which was a big plus for us). We can recommend Burnside without hesitation.

With its wonderful location overlooking Stromness and Hoy, Burnside Farm was just what we needed and more. Not only was my room comfy and, with the bathroom, well equipped with everything I could need, the hospitality shown by Joy and Robbie was outstanding. Breakfasts were excellent, with lots of fresh fruit and home baking to accompany the cooking that could include porridge, eggs from the farm, bacon, sausages, black pudding etc etc. Home baked bere bannock is to be recommended.
The comfortable lounge and conservatory dining area were available to us at any time, with plates and cutlery being provided if we wished to bring back a 'carry out' (take away) so that we could watch the evening sunlight on the hills of Hoy.

Burnside Farm can be seen from the Stromness ferry terminal and is within easy walking distance up a gentle hill. The Stromness-Kirkwall-St Margaret's Hope (X1) bus stops by the farm, which makes much of Orkney available to those travelling on foot. Yet Stromness has so much to offer visitors, from high art at the Pier Art Gallery, interesting shopping and museum, nooks and crannies to explore, good cafes, great fish and chips and local walks. The tourist information office at the pier has lots of information sheets to help those wishing to venture further amongst these fascinating islands.

When I return to the Orkneys Burnside Farm will be my number one choice for accommodation.

A beautiful bed and breakfast. Ideally situated for exploring Mainland Orkney. Immaculate throughout. Hospitality second to none. Rooms well appointed with outstanding en suite bathrooms. Incredible selection for breakfast. Home made bread, worth staying just to find out how bread should taste. Nothing was too much trouble. This is a working farm set high over Stromness with outstanding views over Stromness and out to see. Why would anyone stay anywhere else. Burnside Farm is a must stay place and we will be back.

Room Tip: Make sure you book they will be very busy.

What a wonderful place to stay. The whole house has been decorated to such a high standard with a very traditional yet modern feel to it - very inkeeping with the 1950's fashion and farmhouse ambience . The bedroom was very clean and comfortable with stunning views over Stromness looking towards Scapa Flow. You could see the Hoy hills so clearly. The ensuite was bright and fresh. I would recommend this place to anyone and we have said to Robbie and Joy to expect us back in the future!
