“Memories”

I knew the people who lived in the properties before it became an Arts Centre - so visits are very special. This is a real gem - well worth a half-day visit - and a glowing tribute to everyone who has been involved in its development.

“Extraordinary to Find”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

The Pier Arts Centre is found in the renovated and beautifully extended old Hudsons Bay Company depot in Stromness. It is mind-boggling to find an art gallery of this calibre in Orkney - let alone Stromness which, to my mind, is a pretty depressing sort of place. However, the Pier is a magnificent space for the display of art both in periodic exhibition and in its permanent collection. In fact, the permanent collection is stellar - lots of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicoholson, Alfred Wallis and the like - superb but also their net value must be many times that of the rest of Stromness!
I particularly enjoyed the artistic link-up with other Nordic islands such as the Faeroes and the Lofoten Islands.

“I guess I'm just not the Arty type”

I liked parts of the building, especially the harbour view. Some of the contents left me wondering . . . .What Is It?

“Surprising little gem”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

From the outside the Pier Arts Centre isn't too promising however once inside it's bright and airy. I should point out that I'm not a big modern art fan and wouldn't know a Barbara Hepworth if it hit me. That said, the art is accessible enough to enjoy and the building it's in has been refurbished to an excellent standard. I suspect that if I knew more about art, and Barbara Hepworth in particular, I'd have given it 5 out of 5.

If you're in Stromness, pop in and have a look around.

“Fabulous art gallery”
Reviewed June 30, 2012

First opportunity to visit this gallery since it was refurbished. Wonderful building, an amazing setting for an extra-ordinary collection of paintings. The story of how the collection came to be in Orkney. Very impressive.
