Our second stay at The Merkister. The first time was 4 years ago when attending a family wedding and this time was to be at the Christening of the couples first child.
On both occasions we were struck by the quality of the accommodation as well as the very warm welcome we received. The quality of the meals served was excellent. The hotel is situated in a very beautiful location overlooking the lake.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the lake are well worth paying the small extra required

Dear MirfieldOllie
Thank you for your review....We are delighted you enjoy your time at Merkister, we are very lucky to get a lot of repeat guests, so it was nice to hear that this was your second stay.....We have a variety of rooms available for our guests, from our Compact Savers - Standard - Loch Views - Garden Rooms...I agree with you about out location, we have the best of both, a 15 minute drive from the main towns of Kirkwall and Stromness, yet on the doorstep the views, the wildlife, hen harriers, owls, birdlife on the loch etc....I will pass your comments on the excellent food onto the kitchen, they very much appreciate it when someone take the time to say how much they enjoyed the cuisine, we are very lucky to have Orkney's wonderful larder on our doorstep
We look forward se serving you again on your retrun

my husband and I spent a holiday this August/Sept at the Merkister and would rate it very highly. We were booked into their best garden suite, which is large, freshly redecorated and comfortable with fantastic view of the Loch. Hotel itself is full of characters and character...lots of fishermen staying there and regaling all about their catches in the bar. Restaurant is classically decorated, big pictures windows , good quick service and the food is really superb. Well placed for tourist siutes with Scara Brae just down the road.

We would go there again and recommend it. Particularly the local trout cooked in burnt butter which tastes better than it sounds...we suggest you change its name to 'caramelised butter' :)

Room Tip: The garden Suite room one has best view of the Loch.

Dear Cerewan
Thank you for your wonderful review, our Garden Rooms are the best rooms we have available, and I am glad you found them to be so comfortable....The hotel is situated halfway between the main towns of Kirkwall and Stromness, and only a 5 minute drive to the main sites Skara Braw, Maeshowe etc, and we also have the benefit of the wildlife, loch, views etc on our doorstep, we believe our location cannot be bettered,,,,, Skerries Restaurant is open from May - September, the menu changes daily depending on what fresh fish etc has been landed that day, and most nights we run a waiting list for both the Restaurant and Bar, we use Orkney produce wherever possible in our Kitchen, in all our menus. We will look at your comment about the wording of Local Trout in Black Butter, which I am glad you enjoyed, it is a very, very popular dish on our menu...Thanks again for taking the time to post your review..and I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Merkister...

Each year when I am in Orkney, I go to this Hotel to eat. It is the essence of Orkney.
This year the hotel provided " a family gathering of the Clan'. My Auntie Nan had her 90th birthday here with family arriving from S.Africa (where she lives) NZ and various relations 'fae sooth'.
The food is excellent ,fresh and depenable, the staff friendly and helpful and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Hi Folks,
Its took me a longtime to write this review, about 17 years or more . busy man you see, thats why i go to Orkney, to chill out and relax, My son and i have stayed at the Merkister every time we visit. We have seen a lot of changes in the hotel and with the the staff , but must say the hotel has always been brilliant in every way , me being a fisherman im down to earth, but still look for good service and friendliness, have never yet in all the years had to complain about anything, Food is excellent and plentifull, rooms are excellent and staff always friendly, right down to the cleaners, who are brilliant at there job, they are so trusworthy its unbelievable, never once have i had to lock our room door , We dont even ask for the key anymore.
So i will highly recomend that you visit the Merkister Hotel, and have the time of your life

Dear Willie
So you did it...You said you would...your review......and thank you for your kind words, you are right its coming up to 20 years since you first started staying at Merkister....and this year you came back twice! Says it all....We are completely set up for the Angler, we won the Glenmorangie Scottish Fishing Hotel one year, and then Britain’s Best the next...It does helps to have a world class loch on your doorstep though...the staff all know how much you appreciate all their efforts you are one of the "good guys" who tells them everyday what a great job they are doing and thank them for everything as well, it makes their job much easier when serving guests like yourselves...I will download the review so the staff can see your comments, and thanks again for taking the time to post your review.....Look forward to seeing you in June 2013......

We stayed 2 weeks with our teenage son and were all really happy to be there. Location is fantastic - I think the best on Orkney Mainland. It is comfortable without being pretentious and staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant food is reliably good - tasty and interesting, portions are excellent - especially great to see good veg portions, not skimped. Local food is used - a range of fish and meats and the quality is top rate. We also ate in the bar and the same applies. We had no complaints, but did hear a couple of issues raised with staff and dealt with well - in one case about food, with a replacement meal offered (not accepted, but hey, you can't always please people). We have visited before and certainly want to go again.

Dear Joan H
Thank you for your lovely review. I agree with you, we do have the best location on the mainland, only a fifteen minute drive to the main towns, yet on your doorstep, wildlife, walks, views, wonderful sunsets, and the best place to see the ever changing Orkney Light.....We use the best of Orkney produce in both our Lounge Bar and Restaurant Menu. We use fresh vegetables in our Restaurant 3 fresh types daily, so if you are with us for the week, or 2 weeks in your case, you won’t get repeat veggies. Our Lounge Bar is more simple veggies, fresh carrots, peas and red cabbage/turnip etc... It is inevitable that we will not be able to please everyone, but if we are given a chance at the time to put things right, then hopefully we will do that to the guest’s satisfaction. Thank you again for your kind words, I will pass your compliments on to all the staff. Look forward to serving you again in the near future.
