lovely clean & comfortable cottage. Owners provided a generous welcoming pack which was very much appreciated. Garden was a delight although weather conditions meant we didn't get to sit out and enjoy but the view through the windows was lovely. Very quiet and peaceful and lovely beach 5 minutes away, beautiful cliff top walks and history everywhere. Enjoyed the Scapa Flow museum, the Martello Tower and the Royal Hotel where we were made very welcome by the owner and a lovely open fire. Lovely part of the islands and we would like to go back in the future.

“Comfortable, clean, lovely location, great owners and a lovely bunch of pets!”

We were on Hoy on business and this cottage was a perfect base with room to spread out and work in the evenings - so much better than a hotel or B&B. The cottage is in the grounds of the owners' house - a lovely garden with the added bonus of chickens, two cute little goats and 3 lovely dogs. The welcome pack was amazing - fresh eggs from the chooks, freshly made bread, tea, coffee, marmalade, biscuits, fruit juice etc. - more than enough for a lovely breakfast if you happen to arrive late and miss the shop. The kitchen/diner/sitting room was absolutely fine for us but perhaps a little small for larger parties - that said, there is ample, sheltered outdoor space for alfresco dining (and a BBQ is available). There is no oven but the hob, microwave, toaster and slow cooker cater for most needs. The hosts were most welcoming and the location is great - close to a little beach and the cemetery in which the Longhope Lifeboat crew are buried. After visiting the memorial, we went out of our way to go to the Museum at Brims - that is so worth visiting.

Liked best: The cockerel didn't crow at first light (3am) :)
Liked least: We cooked chilli and there was no sieve :( There was a collander so we didn't lose too much rice!

We loved this cottage from the minute we arrived to an extremely warm welcome from Sandra,,Tom and Corben .In the small kitchen area there was a lovely welcoming basket of tea, coffee and local goodies.Every thing was spotlessly clean The cottage is extremely cosy with two very comfortable bedrooms and two settees, a small television, and DVD player in the living room. Every where there are book s of a very varied nature. Another week just to read would be a good idea.
The cottage is situated in Old Hall's very large fenced garden where our children (aged 3,6 8 and to 12) and our dog spent many hours playing with the Family's dogs and son. There were lots of outdoor toys provided. There are wonderful views from the cottage and on dark evenings starry skies and sights of all the lighthouses flashing are worth going outside for.
Tom is very proud of his garden and spends many hours working there. In summer he will have plenty of vegetables available for guests to purchase. The family also took delivery of two beautiful baby pigmy goats whilst were were there, to the delight of our family.
There are many lovely walks (both short and long), close by with the nearest beach being less than 5 minutes away.
Longhope village is just a few minutes by car and the village shop is adequate for supplies of food. The lifeboat museum and the memorial in the local cemetery are worth visiting and extremely moving. A trip to Rackwick Bay at the opposite end of the island plus a walk in to The Old Man of Hoy is really recommended.
Sandra was extremely helpful and excellent at answering all our queries before and during our stay and whilst she and Tom have their home in the grounds they are very friendly but not intrusive in any way. We were a very large group of three adults and four children and the only disadvantage was the very small kitchen area but this would probably be perfectly adequate for the usual smaller parties of three or four people.
I would certainly recommend a stay here for those who are hoping for a peaceful holiday and wishing to explore Hoy.
