Booked the Alona Hotel as going to Hamilton Races. What a find. From checking in to checking out, the whole experience was fantastic. The staff are all absolutely a credit to the hotel. The rooms lovely. Breakfast was great. The piano player and singer were brilliant, what a lovely touch. Will definitely be back and would recommend hotel to anyone.

We were traveling from Skye, via ferry, and driving to the Lake District. This hotel made a very convenient and easily accessible stopover on our way. We were very satisfied with the hotel, our room and the dinner we had that night. Breakfast (included) was a bit iffy as they had apparently decided that it was over and did not refresh or replace some of the offerings. In fact, when our name was checked off there were only two rooms not crossed off. However there was still about 45 minutes to go. This hotel appears to be a business hotel and I assume all the businessmen were on their way early on. No excuse to shortchange other guests.

Visited Alona for a celebratory meal (approx 15 people). Issues: On arrival we had to ask to be seated.
After ordering drinks some were served but others waited a further 20 mins( would like it noted that the young man who served drinks was not at fault. He worked hard whilst other staff stood at bar and chatted!) he also apologised for delay when we queried it and showed professionalism.
Meal was substandard. Frozen roast potatoes which were solid. Small portion sizes, chicken very dry.
Staff not attentive. Not of 4* training -again, fault of management.
One if our party didn't order a dessert ( which we had to order with our starters and main) but later changed her mind. When we asked for it to be added to order we were told ' we are being hammered in the kitchen but will get one to u as soon as we can') a strange response since it was included in the set meal price and was a cold dessert... No cooking required.
Overall, there are many competitors in the 4* restaurant and hotel business within the vicinity of alona so such a disappointing performance is unacceptable. Personally we will not return.

I stayed here for a week through work, was pleasantly surprised that the hotel looked nice and tidy, got my room and it was very roomy and neat, although the door handle was broke on the toilet door. .. but it was at meal time when I found the hotels strong point... the restaurant had a very good menu and the food was fresh and amazingly cooked and presented. .. I would definitely go back, even with the family especially as theres a theme park at the back of it

I booked a superior twin room online, the day we were intending to stay. I was traveling with a friend to Hampden Park in Glasgow, to a quilting show and this looked like it would be a good place to stop just outside Hamilton, south of Glasgow.

At £50 for the room including breakfast it was a reasonably priced to book via the web (LateRooms.com).

The hotel is situated just off the M74, alongside the Strathclyde Loch. This hotel is about 15 minutes drive from Glasgow, with lots of parking and in pleasant surroundings, for the most part.

Our room (I think it was number 321) overlooked the rear car park and was bright and clean with an en-suite* with wet room style shower. All the regular amenities were provided - hair dryer, kettle etc, and although we didn't use the restaurant the menu looked varied if a little overpriced.

I was aware of the reports of noise from the wedding marque which is large and situated at the back of the hotel, but there was little noise at 18:30 on arrival. We walked up to the Toby Grill for dinner and it was a pleasant stroll there and back along the banks of the Strathclyde Loch.

We returned to our room around 21:00 and we were then aware of the hint of thumping music coming from the event behind us. My co-traveler and I chatted for a while and watched TV until after 23:00 and I noticed that the noise had stopped, on balance I don't think it would have prevented us sleeping, but could have been a distraction for children/light sleepers.

The self-service hot breakfast was lovely with a choice of cooked sausages and freshly fried eggs. There were a variety of cereals, toast and drinks and freshly brewed coffee (not shown in photo).

There were a variety of vending machines in the hallways for water and soft drinks. I noted that 2 guests, with mountain bikes, were shown somewhere safe to lock them below the stairs but were allowed to place them in their room when it was clear that they were clean and not muddy. It showed a relaxed common sense approach to dealing with challenges and a refreshing level of flexibility!

All the staff we encountered were very friendly, the duty managers pleasant and chatty. I'd happily stay there again if we were in the area.

*We reported the extractor fan was not working in the morning when we discovered the shower room steamed up and realised that there wasn't a separate switch of any kind.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel might be quieter if there are events in the marque.
