“Best Food Ever !”
Reviewed January 26, 2009

My husband and I travelled through Scotland for 9 days during mid January 2009 - we came across the Cluny Bank Hotel in Forres as part of our holiday. We were enthusiastically welcomed by Lloyd and introduced to his wife Jules. Our room was lovely, the pre-dinner drinks were excellent, the food for dinner was out of this world - the best we had eaten through Scotland and the dessert was to die for. Excellent value for money for one night's accommodation with a fantastic host and chef !

This year we decided to celebrate Hogmanay in Scotland in stead of the traditional New years eve in the Netherlands.

After making the booking directly with the hotel, we left the Netherlands on the 29th of December.
With a group of eight we took the ferry form IJmuiden to Newcastle and drove up North to Forres.

We have been asked to submit our New Years eve menu (and special wishes, vegetarian menu etc) 2 days before we started our journey.

On arrival we have been welcomed by Julia & Lloyd, who showed us our rooms, which were lovely and with a flat screen with DVD player in it.

The breakfast we had during these days, was made freshly on request and was really good.

The dinner was even better, without exaggerating, the food in this restaurant is the best ever.
The diversity of the menu is great and it was not too much to ask to have something prepared on special request.

After the evening dinner, there is a small but very nice bar next to the restaurant, where they serve a lot of nice Scotch Whiskies.

Lloyd, the chef, is really passionate about his food and when he came to the table to promote his desserts, you just CAN'T refuse these and you shouldn't.

Julia is an excellent host, who's willing to help you to whenever requested. Checking/contacting distilleries in the area to book a tour. Nothing is too much to ask.

We really enjoyed our stay and definitely will come back for more :-)

To summarize:

We have stayed at the Cluny Bank Hotel before, and loved it so much we could not wait to return. We booked online using the Hotels own website, and the communication between the hotel and ourselves before our arrival was excellent. Our requests were accommodated and the owners seemed very friendly.

On arrival we were shown to our room by Lloyd who was very enthusiastic and showed us round our room, which was the Garden Room. It has its own private entrance and vestibule with floor to ceiling windows and was very cosy. Our only view was a brick wall but that didn't put us off.

Breakfast was cooked fresh and was served promptly. There was an average choice with cereal, fruit juice and fruit on the side with a selection of pastries. On the second day our milk was sour, but we felt reluctant to complain for the following reason.

On both days. Julie, the female owner seemed a bit distracted and not at all friendly and the impression was that she could not wait to get rid of either us or friends who were also staying at the hotel. On the second day, we stayed talking with our friends until about 10 am in the dining room and were informed by Lloyd - “Checkout is 1030”! We all ran back to our rooms to gather up our belongings and checked out. Before we could do this, we were passed in the corridor by Julie, with a hoover rushing into our room to clean.

I cant put my finger on it, but I just felt that they wanted to get rid of us!

We knew before arriving at the hotel that ownership had changed, but this did not put us off as we felt that the new owners would stick to the same friendly, welcoming formula that we had found on our last trip. However this was not the case for us, and we regret to say it, but we wont be back.

  • Liked — Our room was lovely
  • Disliked — The Staff made us feel very as if we were an inconvenience.

Really only need to say two things firstly that there are two sides to every story and secondly do you think we would accept another booking from you anyway.

Having Stayed at the Cluny Bank's on numerous occassions (Business in the area), I can only say it was a pleasure to stay in such a wonderful hotel.
Lloyd and Jules should be proud of what they have achieved in the time that they have been there.
From the moment you arrive at the front door you are treated as part of the family, nothing is to much trouble.
I have stayed in all the rooms at one time or other and can recommend all of them. You are taken to your room and everything is explained in detail. The bar area is very pleasant both in the summer and winter and JD (The Springer Spaniel) normally comes to see you later in the evening.
Going for dinner is an experience not to be missed. You can have a pre-dinner drink in the bar (With olives and nuts), brouse the menu, and then Jules will take your order, she will invite you into the dining room and bring your drinks through on a tray. Then the experience starts. The menu is changed regularly and the content is fabulous. The rack of lamb is never to be missed. Once you have finished your starter and your main course, Lloyd will come to your table kneel on the floor and narrate the dessert menu to you, and it is always a treat. There is also cheese and biscuits. When the dessert arrives you will be amazed.
Breakfast is also well presented and the poached haddock is incredible.
I am a chef and have been in the catering business for 42 years and can honestly say that the Cluny Bank's Hotel is one of the finest family run hotels I have stayed in.
Well done.

We travelled 10 hours to stay with lloyd and jules at this wonderful hotel with a fantastic setting. It's been 18months since we ate with lloyd ( formally from Lincolnshire) and he did us proud! As always this man is a chef in a million, if you haven't tasted his food them your missing out big time. Glad to know he's just won a top award with he so deserves.Lincolnshire lost the best when he moved to scotland. We will be back to enjoy the hospitality of cluny bank and Lloyd and Jules with their beautiful daughter.

  • Liked — The whole place was just fantastic, a wonderful building with top quality rooms.

Just arrived home after a weekend stay at the Cluny Bank.
We had to write a review as it is richly deserved.
Everything about this hotel made us feel totally relaxed, the welcome from Lloyd was warm and genuine, he personally showed us our lovely room ( which had it's own entrance).

We were spoilt for choice at breakfast, fresh berries, yoghurt, cereal, fresh fish with poached egg, sausages, bacon eggs( free range and local) haggis, (local) lots more, too much to mention.

Dinner was fresh, cooked to order, canapes were a nice touch, fresh bread, with dates/ brocolli, beautiful.

Steak (local) was fantastic, guinea fowl cooked to perfection, hubby had sweet, cooked cheescake, very nice.

I wanted to eat my cheese board in the soft seats in the bar, no problem.

We thoroughly recommend this hotel for a relaxing weekend, it's just a short walk to the town, through the woods at the back is a pleasant walk.

Jules and Lloyd are both lovely which helps, and they are down to earth.

Thank you, we said we would come back and we will!
