“Food Poor”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

We were a group of five on Saturday evening, venue chosen after having experienced several visits to bar area for breakfast and lunch.
Whilst the service was good, the staff friendly the food was sadly lacking. Only the chicken dish passed muster.
Hugely disappointed as located right on our doorstep and could have become "our local" - suffice to say we won't be eating here again - although I do recommend the coffee!
Decor - beautiful

“fantastic food and setting”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

Went to the Paper Mill for dinner on an Itson voucher. It was a fantastic experience, event my 5 year old was made very welcome and catered for. The food was delicious I had the bavette steak which was out of this world really jucy and tender will definately have that again. My husband had the duck encroute which was delicious and tender. house wine delicious too. My daughter had childs pasta which is just the right amount on the plate and she ate the lot! She also had the home made ice cream - chocolate which was a bit rich for her and the waiter noticed her not eating it and swapped it for vanilla without even asking. My daughter now wants to eat there every friday night.

They also do beer tasing nights and have regular special offers.

The Paper Mill is reasonably priced for delicious food and has a nice friendly and local atmosphere will definately go back and would and already have recommended to friends and family A1++

“Lovely decor and bar area but ........”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

Went on the coldest night of the year so far and were warmly greeted and seated. Beautiful decor and ambience. Unfortunately the the air conditioning was on full blast nearly blowing out the candles in the process so it was cool at the table.Starter of Scallops .....well one scallop cut in half with a chorizo sauce.........at £7 a pop not good value. Mains....again miniscule portions, Sweet....Creme Brule good but 3 cheese boards with tiny slices of cheese....again miniscule for the price or as my pal said "Did Stevie Wonder cut the cheese ??" ....the waitress did laugh !!

So in summary...nice building but not good value for money food wise. Not a patch on its main competition in Bonnyrigg or the Gastro Pub on the A7.
Shall not be returning.

“A funky enjoyable experience”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

what a treat , I have been before and to be frank, the experience is certainly enjoyable . The manager was very attentive and the waiting staff were pro-active (rare to find anywhere these days). however i wasn't a hundred percent relaxed . I was aware that the manager who was hovering around unsettled the staff and they seemed a little on edge, which un-nerved me a little.
The food was really tasty too although I did feel for the money it was borderline value for money.

The star of the show is the place itself ... a visual wow factor when you walk in , and an ambience to die for .... if they can calm the electricity between management and staff down and make if fun, then this place will always be busy. Personally, I love it.... but word around town is that people leave hungry .The papermill (la new place) have some challenges ahead to deal with those potentially damaging rumours. I felt it was adequate . Go have fun ...... its a brilliant spot for a romantic dinner.

“Fantastic food in a beautiful restaurant”
Reviewed November 29, 2012 via mobile

I have now been to The Papermill for dinner and lunch - both superb and very tasty. For dinner I enjoyed a beautiful soup followed by a lovely tasty chicken dish with a tarragon sauce. For lunch today my son and me really enjoyed the beef burgers followed by coffee and hot chocolate. The portions were more than ample without being overpowering. A lovely place to enjoy a superb meal and great value for money too.
