The setting the staff and the relaxed and laid back atmosphere make it a very welcoming place. I would recomend a visit on a Saturday afternoon when all ages and kinds of people descend on the bar at the heart of the community.

After a long day hiking in the nearby woodland, I was feeling exhausted and absolutely famished so it was with great anticipation that I arrived here just in time for dinner. I was rather disappointed at having to wait more than 30 minutes for our meal to arrive (to be fair, the place was extremely busy and the lone waitress was rushed off her feet), but it was worth the wait. I'm a big fan of both mushrooms and salads, and the side salad that came with my mushroom burger was particularly delicious! The portion size was good and I left with a very full and happy stomach.

The restaurant itself is attached to a small bar, and unfortunately at that time there were a few noisy drunk people (at 6pm??? I ask you...), but apart from that the atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming. The waitress was very friendly despite being obviously overworked, and did her best to make sure we had an enjoyable visit. I don't feel it would be such a family-friendly place due to the possibly belligerent or unpleasant nature of the drinkers (my partner told me that there was a man vomiting in one of the bathroom stalls - ick!!), but if in Whiting Bay again with other adults I would probably pay another visit.

We went for lunch on an out of season Monday.... usually not the best time in Arran to get the best service and a hearty lunch. We were so lucky. The lovely hostess confessed that chef wasn't due to start till 3.00 pm (we arrived at 1.30 pm) but she was more than happy to try and cater for us... and she did. We were staying self catering locally and wanted to treat ourselves (four adults, one child and a baby) to lunch to fortify us for our long journey home.

Hubby had been in on the Friday, and Sunday - with other family - apparently had a ball on the Sunday... - if you enjoy live music he says go - I was left with sick sleepy baby - and he now considered this his temporary local. He wanted to share his local with me.... bless him. We were very much fortified.... our locally sourced gammon steaks were just perfect, my daughter's steak pie - locally sourced again - (had to try a bit) was totally fulfilling, burgers, soup, sandwiches all spot on. ................Oh, and the chips!! not usually a chip fan but we should have ordered extra portions.

As with anywhere on Arran expect to pay a minimum of £10 for any main. When we were in the Eden Lodge on the Monday it was very quiet so the atmosphere was non existent, but it was clean, bright and I quite enjoyed that we pretty much had the place to ourselves. My daughter tells me the Sunday was the opposite. It was jumping then. I wish I had been able to go on the Sunday. Now getting seriously nagged by hubby to arrange a visit to stay. Think we will. xxxxx
