“Best hotel on Arran”
Reviewed September 3, 2010

We have been staying at this hotel since the new owners took over. The first time only a few rooms had been completed. Now it is fabulous. To sit outside in september (26degrees) having a drink and watch the seals bobbing up and down. A walk along the beach early to see them playing. Then a walk along to the rocks to see them bathing in the sun! Wow! The service at the hotel was excellent and the food really good. For a small hotel you cant get better. You might get more luxuries at one of the bigger ones but everything else makes up for that!

This was our first trip to Arran and found the Kildonan Hotel by chance, "and what a find"
The views from the Hotel were superb and so relaxing. The staff so friendly, which all made our stay so memorable.
We started our break on Arran camping but after a very wet night under canvas we found the Hotel and decided to spoil ourselves for a couple of nights. At the reception on seeing our wet look we were offered the Bridal Suite, which after 36 years of marriage really touched us.
Our stay at the hotel will be remembered with affection and we will try and go back again in the future.

I've never wirtten a review on trip advisor before but feel compelled to tell you about this beautiful hotel on the Isle of Arran.
On leaving the ferry it's a 30 minute scenic drive south along the coast. The hotel itself is situated right on the beach front with possibly one of the best views on the island looking out to sea. From the moment we arrived one word seemed to be uttered over and over...WOW! First up we were greeted by Ryan who showed us around the hotel and introduced us to other staff. All very friendly and made us feel like old friends who had come to visit. We then sat on the beach front with a beer watching the seals basking on the rocks before heading in for a meal in the restaurant where the food and service was exceptional. We had the Venison which just melted in the mouth! It was about £27 for three courses of a standard that usually befits a very special occasion and a price tag of at least double.
The next morning, to wake up with the beautiful view of Ailsa Craig out of the window was truly magical. Breakfast was the usual choice but there the similarities end as they not only have a great chef but obviously use good ingredients. It really tells when you have something as well known as an English breafast. Not only that but to sit in the glass fronted conservatory looking out to sea whilst the bang & olufsen audio system (always a sign of good quality) set the mood was the perfect way to start the day.
We were on a golfing holiday and with 7 courses on the island you are really spoilt for choice. Lamlash and Shiskine were our choice - both about 15minutes drive away and both probabkly in our top 2 courses ever played. stunning scenery and well designed courses although a buggy is a must at Lamlash.
Back at the hotel after a day of golf we again sampled the hotel bar, which really is more like a local pub then a stuffy hotel bar. We didn't move from the tables on the beach front as the bar staff were more then efficient in making sure our glasses didn't run dry. This time we plumped for a bar meal...a lovely chicken madras which again was excellent.
To sum up, the hotel is outstanding in all areas. I've stayed in plenty of 4 & 5* hotels around the world that aren't a patch on this. Go there - you will love it.

We holiday regularly on Arran and have never before even considered checking what this lovely hotel had to offer. So glad we finally did. Service was excellent in all areas - from cleaning of room to bar/reception/restaurant. Double room with living area and balcony was spacious and decorated to a very high standard with extremely comfortable bed. Location was fabulous with excellent sea views and very quiet at night. There was a shop in the hotel, so getting a morning newspaper presented no problem. Food was varied and delicious. Would certainly return here.

We had to partially arrange our wedding from Bangkok and the Kildonan Hotel were incredibly helpful from the start. Dealing with them over a long distance is no problem. From the very moment we arrived the hotel staff made everyone very welcome. All rooms were in perfect order and the Anne had arranged a bonfire on the beach as promised. The bonfire and burgers went down well setting everyone up nicely for the wedding day on the Saturday. Due to the wind the ceremony was held inside but that wasn't a problem at all. The sun came out and everyone went outside for some stunning pictures due to the lovely location. The meal and evening reception was flawless. The meal service was great and everyone received their steak (or chicken or Salmon) exactly the way they ordered it. A huge thank you to Anne, Rod and their team for all their hard work and for making our day perfect.

On our third visit to this Hotel we were in room 17 adapted for disabled access and found it extremely comfortable and fit for purpose. The staff service was extremely friendly and helpful and the food was excellent with a good bar menu as well as an excellent diningroom, Our room led out to a private patio area which offered a sea view and the hotel frontage offered the most comfortable and relaxing environment you could wish for. Our friends occupied room 16 which also offered them every comfort they required with very nice sittingroom area within. We would encourage anybody looking to holiday in Arran to consider staying at this hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Unwind and forget your troubles at our small, family run hotel. Built in the 17th Century, it is one of the 7th oldest licensed Inns in Scotland and historically a destination that families have aspired to visit for well over 100 years. Perched on the southern-most tip of Arran with panoramic views to die for, the hotel is located right on the seafront, the beach literally stone's throw away. Overlooking the Firth of Clyde we are right in the middle of a unique eco-system with a plethora of wildlife. We have seals basking daily on the rock jetties off-shore, otters feeding and playing on the rocks and gannets diving non-stop through the day. We are also fortunate to have occasional basking sharks and dolphins visiting in the summer months and an array of birds-of-prey including eagles, peregrines, buzzards and more... Pladda Island sits directly across the sound with its recognisable lighthouse and ever changing silhouette playing host to a large colony of seagulls and gannets. And of course the famous Ailsa Craig, 'Paddy's Milestone', a bird sanctuary now but is renowned for its granite which is still used for curling stones today. The interior is fully refurbished, still maintaining some the quaint characteristics of old, while the tasteful addition of extended bistro and lounge area with floor to ceiling windows allow residents and diners to gaze for miles over a cup of tea, breakfast or an evening meal. ... more   less
