The Kildonan Hotel

The best way to approach this hotel is from the sea. The alternative, and conventional way, in is down from the main road through the hotel's back yard. It is a mess. Perhaps the rears of most hotels are - although not the Lagg Hotel's at Kilmory.

We had fancied afternoon tea at Kildonan, perhaps with drop scones and local butter, so pressed on. The entrance through the bar at the side was not a good start. The bar staff took no notice of us at all, (our footsteps might have been drowned by the loud back-ground pop music), so we continued inside to find a host. We found no-one. There seemed to be nowhere we could sit and enjoy the view of Pladda with a good brew to hand. We did see some scones, a basket full of them, uncovered and un-priced, hardening in the bar. Perhaps they had been left for guests to throw at the seagulls. Or for the staff to throw at people looking for service. Either way we felt we were on a loser.

There was only one thing to do - retreat. We left through the scrapyard at the back and hurried on to the hospitality and service of the Lagg Hotel. We recommend that the itinerant reader does the same.

Room Tip: Enquire at the Lagg Hotel

It has been a few years since we visited the KiLDONAN HOTEL on Arran. After a recent business trip to Glasgow we decided to return to the island hoping to recapture the magic we experienced on our first visit. Happily nothing had changed. Everything was just as we remembered. The bucolic Scottish sites, and natural exquisite beauty of this picturesque spot was just what we needed to refresh our bodies and minds. As always the service, and accomodations were excellent. Clean modern rooms with free wi-fi. The restaurant has a great menu and daily specials. We ate there every day and enjoyed all we had. :-)

It's a real shame this place. Amazing potential but unfriendly staff & non existent customer service skills will keep me from returning or ever recommending this place. I think the fact that they are the only Hotel in Kildonan make the owners of this hotel complacent that they don't have to adopt customer service skills. We asked for money back following a very disappointing lunch experience only to be challenged by the waiting staff.
On the plus side, amazing views & location however should you want to go to Kildonan, rent a house & go to the other many fine hotels, restaurants on Arran & save yourself the disappointment.

We recently spent a lovely weekend at the Kildonan Hotel on Arran. The location is very peaceful being right on the seafront looking out to Pladda island with Ailsa Craig in the background. We were given a nice welcome from the staff and they continued to be very pleasant and helpful throughout our stay. We enjoyed or breakfasts which were served in a lovely restaurant with a lovely view from the all glass front. Our room was very clean and comfortable and would have no hesitation in recommending a visit to the Kildonan

Room Tip: other guests they well very pleased with an upgrade to room 8

I took a group of 30 people to this beautifully situated hotel beside the sea on the Isle of Arran. We took every bedroom in the place and received fabulous service from attentive staff. The rooms are worth far more than the hotel is charging and the ones with balconies are absolutely wonderful. We dined looking out to sea and Pladda island a few hundred metres offshore and the ambience was calming and peaceful. The meal was perfectly executed - no mean feat for 30 hungry men with another dozen or so in the restaurant. Eating nicely cooked fish beside the sea was a joy. The entire stay was made very easy to organise and very pleasant and enjoyable, all thanks to Anne and her staff. Many people who were in our group are determined to return and enjoy this treasure all over again.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms 8,9,10 or 11. They have balconies and superb views and are peaceful and very comfortab...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Unwind and forget your troubles at our small, family run hotel. Built in the 17th Century, it is one of the 7th oldest licensed Inns in Scotland and historically a destination that families have aspired to visit for well over 100 years. Perched on the southern-most tip of Arran with panoramic views to die for, the hotel is located right on the seafront, the beach literally stone's throw away. Overlooking the Firth of Clyde we are right in the middle of a unique eco-system with a plethora of wildlife. We have seals basking daily on the rock jetties off-shore, otters feeding and playing on the rocks and gannets diving non-stop through the day. We are also fortunate to have occasional basking sharks and dolphins visiting in the summer months and an array of birds-of-prey including eagles, peregrines, buzzards and more... Pladda Island sits directly across the sound with its recognisable lighthouse and ever changing silhouette playing host to a large colony of seagulls and gannets. And of course the famous Ailsa Craig, 'Paddy's Milestone', a bird sanctuary now but is renowned for its granite which is still used for curling stones today. The interior is fully refurbished, still maintaining some the quaint characteristics of old, while the tasteful addition of extended bistro and lounge area with floor to ceiling windows allow residents and diners to gaze for miles over a cup of tea, breakfast or an evening meal. ... more   less
