Went to this fish and chip shop twice while on holiday in Arran this August. First time got served straight away, huge portions but that was all you could say about it - hunger is good kitchen as they say. Second visit - what a disaster, I've never seen anything like it, queue for over half an hour - food is cooked to order which sounds lovely but hardly the way to run a business when the queue is out of the door and round the block and there is a ferry disembarking full of hungry passengers. You stand in one queue eventually get served - there is only one guy cooking the food - why he could not just have chucked in a dozen fish and some chicken I don't know it clearly would have sold. THEN you have to rejoin the second queue at the other side of the shop (but it's not a big shop so chaos reigns, no one knows what they are meant to be doing). 20 mins later you have to basically re order your food as guy no 2 doesn't know what you want. After all that, with 2 hungry children, the batter was heavy and soggy and the fish tasteless.

It was a wet evening and we had freshly cooked haddock and chips with mushy peas. The service was great with friendly staff. The food tasted brilliant and can't wait to go back for more. Should add - they survived the journey from Brodick to Lamlash in torrential rain!

Visited the "new" chip shop on Arran at the weekend and to be honest, it wasn't any worse or any better than the previous chippy on Arran.
The interior hasn't changed, apart from a good clean. The staff where as hassled and confused as the previous ones, although on a positive they were a bit more cheerful and clean.

The person wrapping the chips, needs some practise, by the time we'd got them home (5mins by car) they'd soaked through the wrapping paper and split it. No carrier bags available, However we do appreciate it was a busy week (it was only Friday at this point). To be honest this should have been anticipated with the weather forecast and the fact that it was August!

The chips were small shards of potatoes and the fish was a little over done especially as it had been cooked to order, the batter was heavy and soggy. There were plenty of chips and a good size of fish for the price, we were full after eating most of it and didn't feel hungry.

Over all as I've said it wasn't any better than the previous Bilbo's chippy.... which is a shame, because it promised so much but didn't meet the expectations of being a gourmet chippy on the island.

The first night treat for our holiday is always fish and chips and our visit to Arran was no exception.
Food was cooked to order, lovely and hot, very tasty. Beware though that the portions are HUGE, ordered cod and chips for my husband and I and costly but 2 huge pieces of fish with loads of chips. One son had sausage and chips, normally a portion is 2 small sausages or one large but this was 2 large. Other son had burger and couldn't finish it all. I would recommend ordering less eg 1 fish supper and 1 chips so that you can share the fish.
The batter was nice and crispy and the chips were the best we have had in a long time. The staff were firendly and chatty.
The only negative was that they kept forgetting the order - could do with writing it down or something?

You would think that being on a Scottish Island there would be good fish and chips. This has not been the case until recently. Wow! what a change; the new owners are now providing the best fish and chips we have had in ages. Lovely crispy batter on perfect haddock or cod. Chips freshly cooked and actually taste of potato. Strongly recommended!. Good luck to new owners.
