“A beautiful house, a super intimate hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2013

We returned to Arran and this hotel after several years and immediately wondered why we had lef it so long. Great hospitality and good food. We had our dog with us so chose the Dovecot, an outside room which suited us fine. The evening meal is a fixed menu (four courses with canapes and coffee) but if you have a problem with anything they will make an effort to accommodate your preferences. We enjoyed excellent breakfasts - and as I never eat a cooked one I appreciated the fruit and yoghurt options and also the croissants and pastries. Look out for the peacock in the garden - especially when he displays his fantastic plummage.

Shame on you for leaving it so long to revisit Arran!!!! Seriously, though, we are delighted that your stay at Kilmichael contributed to your renewed appreciation of our beautiful island and that our 'non-cooked' options at breakfast scored such a hit - just don't leave it so long to revisit next time!

Kilmichael is the perfect antidote to faceless corporate hotels. Small, but spacious enough, elegance without over-formality, and very very welcoming. The complimentary decanter of Arran whisky in our room was a typical little touch of hospitality; pre-dinner drinks in the drawing room with other guests; delightful furnishings and decoration. They were just some of the features which make this a sanctuary of civilised relaxation. And the food! Dinner was the most delicious meal we can ever recall (outside home of course). We wondered if we had just struck lucky that evening, but were assured by other guests that it is consistently as good. So thanks and congratulations to the hard working owners who have created a real treasure. PS. The website we discussed on the morning we left is PFK Auctions.

Room Tip: Free range peacocks are just one of the attractions of the hotel grounds, and can provide a surprise...

A last minute booking secured a Suite and dinner on the Saturday evening, a special treat for our son Jacob who had spent many weeks preparing for and taking his Scottish Higher exams. The ground floor suite was delightful, and enabled us to provide our son with his own room and bathroom. Very appreciative of the service, shown by collecting us from the last ferry in time for dinner!! It would indeed have been a long walk with overnight bags. The peacocks greeted us with a fine display as we arrived, and set the elegant tone which is the hallmark of Kilmichael, its owners and team. Dinner at Kilmichael is a special treat that all guests look forward to, and it was a pleasure to meet other guests in the drawing room for an aperitif. We had promised ourselves a challenging walk up Goat Fell, the highest mountain on Arran, the following morning, After further chat with other guests and a hearty breakfast, we were given a lift to the start of the walk up Goat Fell. For those who enjoy combining a luxurious stay with a challenging walk to take in glorious scenery at every level then Kilmichael is a home from home, much as others might prefer to golf or cycle. And,after enjoying so much lovingly prepared and presented food , one has to take some exercise!! For the record, the scramble up Goat Fell is challenging for infrequent hill-walkers, the views are awesome in all directions, and allow c 6 hours if you are to complete the round trip at your own pace.

Stayed here whilst attending a wedding on the island. Wonderful welcome - I had phoned to ask for an early check-in so that we could get ready in time and everyone knew us as soon as we arrived! Room was lovely, great bathroom, huge choice of excellent food for breakfast. The peacocks should get a special mention for looking splendid outside the window!

If you are looking for a place that upholds the standards of the finest British country hotel, in a lovely location, with an excellent table to boot, this is it. At the same time it is small, almost intimate, so it's not some place where you could even imagine holding a fancy business meeting or a wedding with 500 guests. The welcome is warm, but there is something of an air of formality that is in keeping with the traditions the hotel is maintaining. (This does not extend to a formal dress code, so far as I could tell.) Dinner is basically a set menu with some choices. The food is expertly prepared with some welcome traditional Scottish specialties. There are certainly a number of restaurants in Scotland that specialize in innovation and such fashionable trends as fusion cooking. It is not meant as a criticism to say that is not what you should expect here.

Room Tip: We very much enjoyed our beautifully decorated room in the annexed behind the hotel.

We stayed for a wekend break and would like to thank all concerned for making our stay at the hotel memorable, (even the peacocks and chickens).
We received a a warm welcome from the front of house, and experienced excellent service thoughout.
We must add a very special thanks to the chef who amazed us with his talented cooking and presentation,
With such good service, food and wine it made our short stay totally relaxing and look forward to our next visit.
