“A wonderful country house hotel in beautiful surroundings!”
Reviewed September 16, 2012 via mobile

My partner and I stayed in the garden suite. Beautifully decorated and comfortable. We loved the attention to detail with little touches such as a wee dram in the lounge area, the very addictive home made love heart shortbread and the Arran Aromatics products in the bathrooms which we really like to use. We enjoyed a very peaceful and comfortable nights sleep in a four poster bed.
We had a superb dinner in the dining room and the service was really top notch. The menu was altered especially for my lactose intolerance which was great. They even remembered this the next day at breakfast. The owners of Kilmichael were very friendly and hospitable. On our next visit to Arran we will definitely be staying there. It was a lovely experience!

Our stay in Kilmichael House was somewhat of a last minute affair, as it only occurred to us a fortnight previously that our anniversary weekend was fast approaching. Arran took our fancy and we scoured the internet for an available room - we are so thankful that it turned out to be a room at the Kilmichael!

We decided to leave the car on the mainland and walked to the hotel from the ferry terminus. The long, sweeping driveway leading up to the house was enchanting, festooned with overhanging branches from the trees lining the road and opening out to a beautiful view of the house itself and its grounds. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the owner and shown to our room, the Rose Bedroom. It was absolutely beautiful. The decor was stunning and the high level of attention to detail is something that I've never encountered at a hotel before. Delicious shortbread, fresh fruit, and a wee dram settled us in nicely.

Our original plans for the afternoon were immediately shelved in favour of exploring the grounds of the house. The gardens are stunning. We particularly loved the statue of Pan and, being great lovers of chickens, Chickenopolis was a great thing to stumble upon as we hadn't noticed it on the map of the gardens (helpfully included in a very comprehensive folder of information about Arran and the history of Kilmichael House that was in our room).

After returning from a walk to front, via the route round the grounds helpfully suggested by the owner, we enjoyed a mind blowingly wonderful dinner. Our waiter could not have been more attentive and the food was undoubtedly some of the best we've ever tasted. Similarly, our breakfast the next morning was delicious, especially the sausages and the black pudding!

If we have any complaint about Kilmichael it is of our own doing - one night just isn't enough! We would have loved to have spent more time there. The whole place has a magical air about it. Before our dinner we were chatting to other guests in the drawing room (in which, again, the decor was stunning, and it was really lovely to see the personal touches that the owners had added to the house, especially the framed photographs). One couple we spoke to had just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and mentioned that they had been visiting Kilmichael since their children were very small. We can certainly understand why people choose to return to Kilmichael House again and again, and we fully intend to return in the near future. We really cannot recommend it highly enough!

My girlfriend and I spent one night in the Kilmichael Hotel on the 15th of September and while she is sharing her own review of the hotel I'd just like to add my thoughts as well. It is without a doubt the nicest place we have ever spent a night together, everything about the hotel was utterly enchanting. We stayed in the Rose Bedroom which was beautifully decorated with so much attention to detail, much like the drawing room and dining room in which we spent our evening. The owners have clearly put a lot of themselves int the hotel and it really shines through and added to the feeling we were honoured houseguests rather than merely another two customers through the door.

Of particular note are the grounds of the hotel, we spent a lovely hour or so wandering through the beautiful gardens enjoying the company of the peacocks and admiring the statues dotted about, especially the obelisk the proprietors have erected marking their 15th anniversary in Kilmichael in 2005. We particularly enjoyed Chickenopolis where we presume the eggs we ate for breakfast came from.

The absolute stand out part of our stay was the dinner we had though, the menu was fantastic, every dish carefully chosen and described on the menu which added to the personality shining through every aspect of the hotel's service. The food was quite simply some of the best we've ever had and I would urge every person staying at the hotel to partake, I can't imagine there's a better meal available in Arran, indeed you'd have to go a long way to find anything to match it. We were very impressed though not at all surprised to see the wall crammed full of awards upon leaving the dining room, every one well deserved I'm sure.

We initially selected the hotel on a whim, not really knowing anything about it in advance but it was so perfect we are eagerly counting the days until we can return. Indeed we almost didn't leave, though that was partly due to a pair of beligerent geese who accosted us on our departure!

Room Tip: Our's was the Rose Bedroom which was splendid but I have a hard time imagining any of the rooms...

Thank you for your delightful review. We are enormously gratified that you mention all the aspects of Kilmichael of which we are most proud. You are right in saying we put a bit of ourselves into the hotel (it is, after all, also our home) and it is very flattering to find guests who appreciate this.

i loved my stay in Kilmichael. Nicely decorated rooms which are almost bordering on opulence. Very fine dining and pleasant staff. I think the geese, the peacocks and the bantam hens were a great diversion.
The whole experience was very tongue in cheek high class. It would be good for a special occasion.

Room Tip: All the rooms are pleasant. The one that I had was on the ground (I think that most of them were on...

Thank you for making our day! We love your description of Kilmichael (or is it us that are 'posh and just a little quirky'?) in either case we are tickled pink, and extremely glad that you had such a good time here.

We chose to stay at Kilmichael Country House Hotel on the Isle of Arran, our first visit to the island, as a result of excellent reviews in a number of trusted hotel guide books and from reports in TripAdvisor and our hopes were not only fully met but exceeded.

Geoffrey at "the front of house" is the most perfect and gracious host whilst Anthony and his team in the kitchen conjure up delicious and imaginative dishes for dinner and truly excellent breakfasts. More on the dining room and food in a moment...

The beautiful house is set in lovely secluded grounds in a wooded glen just behind the village of Brodick, about 5 minutes drive from the ferry terminal on the East coast of the Isle of Arran. Inside, the house is decorated and furnished with impeccable taste.

The dining room is also very tastefully decorated and furnished - so nice to find well-spaced tables and very comfortable dining chairs with arms. We had two memorably delicious dinners (note they take a rest from doing dinners on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the season when they are open). After canapés and pre-dinner drinks in one of the two lovely and comfortable sitting rooms with convivial conversations with fellow guests it was off to dinner. We kept the menus to remind us just how good the dishes were, such as:

"Salmon Tartare with Avocado & Coriander Sorbet” to start, which was every bit as good as it sounds and with portions that were just the right size, not too small - all to often, hotels that are obsessed with trying to earn stars & rosettes in awards for their restaurants, serve food in portions that are disappointingly small - not here I am happy to report!!

Next course on one evening was a delicious "Cream of Sorel soup" made from fresh Sorel leaves picked from their garden "potager".

I think my favourite main course was " Breast of Pheasant en papilotte" - tender, moist and delicious.

After that on the first evening we had what was one the most memorably divine puddings I have ever tasted anywhere - and certainly during this entire trip: "Scottish strawberries with raspberry sauce" which was every bit as good as this description in the menu:

" Locally grown strawberries marinated in home made damson gin and served with fresh raspberry sauce together with home made basil ice cream and wee lemon shortbread hearts". I would go to the Isle of Arran and stay here again just to be able to eat this dish again!!

.. and this dinner at £45.00 I consider to have been excellent value for money, and yes, they also have a very good wine list with reasonable prices.

On arrival our reactions on being shown into our very spacious and comfortable bedroom in one of the garden annexes was an appreciative "wow!" Lots of hanging and draw storage space all too often missing from many hotels. The attention to detail by the hotel management meant that the bathroom was well appointed with good towels and toiletries.

So after a truly lovely stay, despite some rather disappointing weather, we wrote the following in the visitors' book prior to leaving:

Quote

You are to be congratulated on the most wonderful hotel, fantastic food, exemplary hospitality and beautifully appointed and tasteful accommodation. As you know, we have travelled widely in Scotland and sincerely rate Kilmichael as possibly the best hotel we have stayed at in Scotland. Hope to be back again soon

Unquote

We travelled on, after staying here, for two weeks staying at other good hotels in the Hebrides and up the West coast of the Highlands and at the end of the trip can look back and sincerely say that this is far and away the best place at which we stayed in Scotland so although the owners have not yet been told (they will find out if they read this) we are already planning another stay at Kilmichael when we return to Scotland in 2013.

In conclusion, this is surely the best hotel on the Isle of Arran - with the added bonus that they are also "dog friendly" - excellent for us as we travel with our Labrador.

This is only the second review I have written for Trip Advisor and, as with the previous one for a hotel in Devonshire, I assure you that we have no connections with the owners and write this solely in the hope that it helps you and because such excellence deserves recognition. If you decide to stay here then we hope you have as good a time as we did, hopefully also with better weather for you to enjoy the lovely Isle of Arran.
