“First visit to Arran”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

This was our first time in Arran and hopefully not our last. It was such a relaxing two days away from the busy city life. Food was amazing at Auchrannie. Swimming pool was lovely and quiet as was the gym.

2 days of relaxation as a couple. Rooms in restored old house hotel part in perfect modern shape, though the shower arrangement was a bit of a bother and the bathroom slightly cramped. Excellent food in Brambles and very complete breakfast in Cruize. Plenty of recreational possibilities all around - inside the resort but also close by on Arran e.g. went golfing at Shiskine GC the other side of the island and it was a 30 min bus over the scenic String Road; then took a long walk along the coastal path towards Lamlash with great views. Priced as a top resort.

Room Tip: We liked the lovely view on the back of the hotel facing inland and the hills. there's no real v...

As I sated into first review which you don't publish this hotel is a Swizz. Thy offer a package with Dinner Bed and Breakfast but clearly you cannot get a decent 3 course dinner for allocated allocated allowance of £20. Unless you want Pizza , Hamburger etc

I paid on total over £87.50 in extra charges made up off only food and also being charged for using Leisure Centre which is is ridiculous. There should be a set dinner for the allowance which Crieff Hydro and Fairmont St Andrews provide they also don't charge kids for use of Leisure Facilities. To charge £7 for Tennis is a disgrace and I was promised that my kids who are 12 would have free access as Kids barn is for 10 year older so I signed up for Kids Play package which my kids couldn't take part in.
It's such a pity as staff I restaurant are excellent but food uninspiring unless you want to pay a lot extra Just for a Steak is £17 which is virtually all re allowance and with drinks and starter or dessert is expensive when you are on a budget at start of holiday.

I don'tind paying extra for special things but re charges are ridiculous and this will make me never come back and terry back to Crieff and St Andrews or Cameon House which have far better restaurant an food options

Food for kids was good value as it was a Buffet and standard pizza etc which is fine

Overall setting was good and a nice break but of they sorted out the Dinner packages more people would come instead of having to fork out extraoney on see challenging economic times

In summary check the menus and cost befor you book and watch for those extras

Thank you for your recent review. I am very sorry to hear that you did not feel we offered value for money.

I would like to clarify that our dinner allowance of £20 can be used in any of our three restaurants and it is possible to get a three course meal in each of them for less than the allowance we provide.

I have taken a look at the Cruize menu in particular and would like to point out that from the current menu there are over 750 possible three course meal combinations available for less than £20. Not just burgers and pizzas as you suggest but a wide variety of dishes including pastas, risottos, curries, salads, chicken and fish dishes.

We feel that providing a dinner allowance (rather than the set menu option) gives our guests the greatest choice when it comes to dining. We allow guests to select whatever they wish to eat from any of our three restaurants, rather than limiting the choices available.

Our charges for other facilities are very much in line with other businesses of our nature and reflect the fact that we charge on a per use basis rather than inflating our room rates to cover the costs of those facilities. Whilst other resorts may appear to offer these facilities for “free” they will in fact be covered by higher room rates.

I’m sorry that we didn’t meet your expectations on this occasion, however I hope that my response will go some way to addressing your concerns about our pricing .

The slogan is 'Beware - Auchrannie is addictive'. After a five-night stay for two of us in this fine hotel, I can well see the possibility. Arran is an absolutely beautiful island, reached by a one-hour crossing on Calmac's 'Caledonian Isles', and the Auchrannie Hotel and Resort are just five minutes away from the ferry terminal in Brodick. The hotel offers a ferry-inclusive package; you tell them your preferred crossing dates and times and they will do the rest with your tickets waiting for you at the ferryport.

The hotel is in a gorgeous spot with spacious grounds and plenty of parking. While the spa resort has its own facilities, the hotel has two restaurants (Eighteen69 and Brambles) and at least three lounge areas, two of them with open fires - lovely!

Our room had the standard layout of hotel rooms just about everywhere but the fittings and equipment were of a high standard. It was extremely comfortable with enough space and very well presented with complimentary water in a small fridge as well as the usual tea-making facilities. Housekeeping left the room in immaculate condition each day even if they could be a little slipshod about maintaining the tea and coffee facilities; this, however, is a small point.

The food at Auchrannie is first class. Breakfasts are an award-winning speciality with a huge range on offer and everything cooked to perfection - simply delicious. We had our evening meals in Brambles restaurant where again the food was invariably excellent. Staff everywhere were, without exception, professional, pleasant, helpful and friendly with that consistency of customer service which can only ever come from dedication and quality training. They genuinely seemed proud of Auchrannie.

My only reservation about Auchrannie is what I would argue is a mismatch between their DB&B rate and their menu prices. £20 per person per day is allowed within this rate for dinner. Normally (and it has been my experience in countless hotels), one should be able to have a three-course meal within the allowance, at least by staying with the cheaper items on the menu. This is not possible at Auchrannie. While one would hardly expect this to work in the flagship Eighteen69 restaurant (minimum set-price menu at £32, for example), it might be expected in the more populist Brambles. But, even here, choosing the cheapest dishes on the menu would still make it impossible to have three courses inside the £20 allowance. This is not meant to discourage anyone visiting Auchrannie; it is meant to raise awareness. We have often travelled in the past as a family of four adults - had we done that this time at Auchrannie for the five nights, the excess food bill would probably have been in three figures on its own.

We desperately needed a get away break together. the trip advisor reviews were very favourable, and I think the largely relied on them to make this booking. We were certainly not disappointed. The staff are very relaxed and helpful. The food is excellent, and we did try each of the restaurants. We did not have time to take full advantage of the facilities offered. We certainly would return again.

Everything is very appealing about this complex, from the warm welcome at check-in to assistance to the room which had been specifically booked in advance. The whole ambience is warm and so restful with abundant lounge areas, one in particular with a blazing log fire which was needed as our visit was in Autumn. Dining facilities are excellent and the Spa complex offered a retail outlet, , massage parlour, hair stylist etc. There is an excellent sports hall encompassing tennis, badminton, net-ball,table tennis etc. The island of Arran is a walkers paradise.

I cannot praise Auchrannie too highly and we have stayed there more times than I can remember. It is consistently good. They think of everything!! They take their feedback seriously and are always adding touches. The room is so comfortable with every facility. The breakfasts are to die for - you couldn't think of anything else to put on the menu. The leisure facilities are excellent too. We ate at Brambles and at Cruize and were not disappointed. You get what you pay for but the service is the same all over the complex - excellent. The staff value you as a person.

Room Tip: If you are slightly disabled, eg find stairs difficult or need more space - just ask the staff
