We had a lovely weekend here. The room was spacious and well-appointed with a beautiful view. All the staff smiled and were very pleasant and helpful. The situation of the hotel is ideal, good fun watching the ferries come in! Good choice of menu and it was well cooked and reasonably priced. A very good base to explore Arran.

Room Tip: Room 102 has double aspect and you can lie in bed and look at the sea!

Just spent 3 nights at the Douglas hotel. We had a really nice time here, the rooms were quite large and well appointed. Staff were very friendly, helpful and professional and the location was extremely convenient. The only slight downside was that the internet on the second floor seemed to be a bit unreliable (laptops and ipads would drop in-and-out of connection). After talking to staff they reset the internet which temporarily fixed the problem but still persisted the next day. We have stayed in other hotels on the island were the internet was more reliable but still quite slow (so this may be a feature of the island). If we'd only been able to escape work altogether this would not have been a problem ; ) In summary:

Advantages:
- Beautiful hotel in great location.
- Friendly staff (generally quite young but very professional and helpful).
- Good sized rooms with great views.
- Good amenities (restaurant, bar etc.)

Disadvantages:
- Internet connectivity (hence only 4/5 stars)
- Bathroom floor tiles needed re-grouting (minor problem)
- Restaurant a bit pricey for us (~ 60 GBP for two ppl, also only minor issue).

This is an older hotel but has been refurbished to give it a more modern, spacious feel than most older hotels in Britain. It is very close to the ferry dock. We had the cottage, which is charming. It has a sleeping loft, accessed by a spiral stair, nice large bathroom, fully equipped kitchen. Lots of towels. Plenty of hot water. Spotlessly clean. Comfortable foam bed. There is a sleeper sofa in the living room. There is a flat screen TV, microwave, and fridge. Satellite TV reception was very spotty, probably because of surrounding trees. Wi fi is free but did not work during our visit. Staff is young, local, very friendly and helpful. Most of the hotel was taken over for a Scottish wedding while we were there and we were treated to their fireworks! Breakfast is ample, with lots of choices. This place is definitely on the pricey side (we paid about $400/night) but very nice. I did not use the spa/fitness center and can't comment on it.

Had a wedding event at the Douglas, with heaps of Scottishness, the whole three days was simply brilliant, the staff were polite and welcoming, the food was presented well and delicious and the quality of the rooms was exceptional, I couldn't recommend more.
