After taking the ferry from the Mainland, the Douglas Hotel is almost directly across from the ferry terminal. The room we were shown was not only enourmous but was immaculate. The service was outstanding and the public areas were immaculate. This is the finest accomodation on the Isle of Arran. I wished we could have stayed longer. The food in the restaurant and bar was wonderful.

We visited in June 2013 for a 4 night break. We were delighted with the quality of all aspects of the hotel, from the decor of the public areas and bedrooms to the food and the enthusiastic, well-trained, helpful staff. The Douglas is so convenient for the ferry port and bus station, we found there was no need to take a car with us.
It was a top class and most enjoyable stay and we hope to visit again soon.

Without a doubt the best hotel we've stayed in. Suite 202 was spotless and spacious. The food was delicious and the staff were young , warm , friendly and down to earth. When we return for a hotel stay in Brodick it will most definitely be at The Douglas.

We stayed two nights recently with my elderly father our rooms were lovely we had upgraded my father to an executive room which was very large comfortable and had views over the bay although the windows were very small and it would have been better if the upgrade had been in one of the rooms with bigger windows. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was excellent we were able to accommodate all our tastes on either the set menu or the a la carte the staff were all lovely and very helpful.
Our only complaint was as with other reviewers the bar area, every other area in the hotel is as you would expect for the grade of hotel but we felt and particularly my elderly father that the bar area lacked any warmth and real comfort for hotel residents we appreciate that it is a bar as stated by the manager but there was nowhere else to go, it is always nice to have a lounge area for guests to relax in after dinner or after breakfast with the papers and a cup of coffee which has comfy seats and we felt this was lacking in the Douglas. We could have gone to one of the rooms but with only two chairs it was not suitable. We always like to go back to our hotel when we are away late afternoon to have a seat and a coffee before we get ready for dinner but there are just not any suitable areas in the Douglas which is a shame there is the small hall area by the disabled toilets but it is not in the least welcoming. We will definitely go back to the Douglas as we loved everything else about the hotel and we will just go to another hotel for our coffee and read at the papers, the Glenisle along the road in Lamlash is lovely for this. We would choose another hotel if we were travelling with my elderly father as the Douglas is more suited to younger people.

Stayed here on the midweek two night deal. Upgraded to executive room which was nice and clean with excellent views over the pier. Hotel has had a lot of money spent on refurbishing it which is apparent. Food was very nice. First night we eat from the set menu included in the deal. Second night we eat from the a la carte which was worth the minimal extra cost.

The mainly young staff are friendly however, would rather stand and chat with each other than getting the tables cleared. We went down for breakfast around 0930 and were directed to our table. All other tables if they didn't have people dining had the previous guests dirty plates lying on them. To my dismay the staff appeared to leave the dirty plates on the tables until the breakfast service was over. Not nice to sit beside when eating food. A floor manager seems to be lacking in this area to give direction.

The hotel also lacks atmosphere. Too often the music stopped playing in the dining room and bar area. It was busy enough when we were there and this is something which really tainted our stay. Sitting drinking cocktails in the bar listening to the whirring of the fridges with a football match from the 90's playing on the TV not a good combination. As mentioned the seating in the bar is not comfortable and faces the bar rather than the lovely views out the window. There is a lovely terrace area when the weather is nice enough to sit outside. The Douglas version of a white Russian is one to try.

We would stay at the Douglas again due to the excellent interior finish and great location. If things could be sharpened up a bit this would be my first choice on Arran every time. After this stay it will be Auchrannie next time.

Lounge for drinks strange arrangements of seating very uncomfortable
Wooden benches & wooden stools good views of harbour missed as seating all facing into bar area

Dear James W
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to review The Douglas Hotel.
We are delighted that you enjoyed our location and views, and that our (Super) King Size Beds, TVs were to your liking!
Not all of our rooms do have a sea view I’m afraid, though when you next visit, please mention that you’d like a sea view as we ALWAYS accommodate this request if it’s at all possible.
We note that you enjoyed our “Mid Week Dinner B&B Package” – indeed, this has proven extremely popular!
Actually, our Dinner Allowance of £17.50 per person does indeed provide a good choice of dishes, as many of our previous reviews have commented on – and of course there is the option to use this allowance in the Bistro or the Bar, where again there is a large selection.
Our breakfasts are something we do pride ourselves on we think that 2 toaster which can provide 8 slices of toast between them is adequate for a small hotel such as ours.
We were a little bit confused regarding your comments on our Bar seating arrangements – we have a mixture of traditional wooden benches, wooden chairs with leather cushion pads, wooden stools and comfy large leather sofas – something which we’d imagined would cover all tastes, however, we have to refute your claim that all of the seating faces into the bar.
More than half of the seats face outwards - over the bay!
I’m not sure which other option you’d expect in a bar to be honest – tempting as it would be to face all of our seats, theatre style, out towards the spectacular views, we don’t think that would be altogether conducive to a sociable environment.
Thank you again for taking the time to review us, and hope that you may indeed return!

We took advantage of a mid-week special that included a room and dinner. The bar was a bit quiet for our tastes, but that's about the worst thing that I could say about this Hotel.

Great updates throughout. Very nice and professional.

Ideal for catching the ferry in the morning...
