Fernie Castle Hotel

Reluctantly stayed for a wedding with my family to save travelling late at night otherwise would not have bothered after reading reviews on here. I'm afraid I agree with most regarding the need for a good clean. Saw our neighbours demanding a different room because it was so unclean. We did have an impressive looking bed but the mattress didn't actually fit - there was about 6inches of plyboard visible between the mattress and edge of bed. Room its self had new wallpaper so perhaps they are slowly upgrading but bathroom badly need upgrading - although large there was nowhere to put towels let alone your own toiletries etc. Food was poor and cold and the sweet on the menu was not available. Service the following morning at breakfast was very poor and choice of food very limited.

The wedding of my son and daughter-in-law at Fernie Castle was a dream come true. From the moment we arrived, "The Laird" took charge of all the arrangements with faultless professionalism. The outdoor wedding ceremony was unforgettable in the gloriousgrounds, the wedding breakfast in a splendid circular function room was memorable, as was the food, and the party afterwards was brilliant, made even better by tireless, helpful, friendly staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. It could not be bettered. While the bride and groom spent their first night in the fantastic and romantic Tree House in the grounds, our accommodation in the castle's Turret Suite was luxury indeed and we were sorry to leave it next morning. Only the splendid breakfast got us up and on our way. A perfect end to a perfect stay. Well done Fernie Castle.

Having seen the hotel from a distance many times I was delighted to be given the chance to stay there. A wonderful building but sadly the place seems in a terminal decline.
Arrival was pleasant enough and we were shown to our rooms. The floor had not been hoovered for a while. The bathroom shows years of wear. Bed comfortable enough and very quiet. Good breakfast but only served from 8am. Not too much interest in what the guest might want or need!
In the folder in the bedroom, found whilst waiting for the missing kettle to appear, I noted that the owner says he carries out frequent and detailed inspections of the bedrooms and anyone found with alcohol not bought on the premises will be asked to immediately leave and will not have their payment refunded! Quite unbelievable in this day and age.
A most profoundly disappointing experience all round and could not get out of there fast enough. You have been warned intrepid traveler.

Me and my wife attended a wedding at this place. The bar staff were all slow and unfreindly and the bar was under stocked for the wedding party, with very little choice not even a can of coke was to be had. The cost of the drinks that you managed to get were grossely overpriced. The whole place was grubby, tiolets were dirty, one even had a leak water all over the place the were not regularly checked as the soap ran out earlier in the evening and was never replaced. The whole place needs a good clean and refurbishment to bring it up to the standard they advertise it to be. I strongly discourage any member of family and freinds from having any fuction at this place. We certainly will not be back.

We had our wedding at this venue in November 2010 and it was the best day of our lives. The venue was amazing and the service was out of this world. I can honestly advise anyone looking to stay at this castle or hold a personal event that you will not be disappointed. The Laird and his family will ensure you are extremly happy and will personally go out of their way to make you feel extremely special. I can not put into words how strongly I recommend Fernie Castle!

We got married at Fernie Castle on November 6th 2010 and we want to share our experience with other prospective guests who may feel concerned at mixed reviews here (as we were).

We arrived on Friday afternoon and most of our guests stayed for the whole wekend so we experienced the Castle as a hotel as well as a wedding venue.

We can say without reservation that every aspect of our wedding and our stay was absolutely perfect. The building itself is magnificent, welcoming and quirky. The Laird, his family and all of the staff attended to our every need and were friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. The rooms and communal areas were clean, thoughtfully decorated and warm. The food was delicious and plentiful. We had a traditional scottish supper served to our guests on the friday evening as well as delicious breakfasts on both mornings and canapes, wedding breakfast and buffet supper on the wedding day, all were faultless. Our guests were particularly impressed with the individual designs of the rooms and the amazing bar that I beleive stands from the original building. The grounds are also breathtaking and some of our favourite pictures from the day are those standing at the edge of the loch.

We chose to stay in the library suite which was a beautiful room and enormous..... myself my Mum and four bridesmaids got ready there without ever getting in eachothers way! One of the things we loved from our first visit was the amazing pre raphaelite style paintings and the murals and the fact that you can walk from a dramatic medieval room into an elegant georgian one (whilst eclectic in a way this actualy represents the life and times of the castle!)

We find it very interesting that Fernie seems to split opinion, the ratings here are either excellent or terrible with few in the middle. Our view on this is that if you are looking for a corporate, shiny venue then Fernie probably isnt for you....stick to a Holiday Inn. If however you want a place with a personality and a little magic that hasnt been spoilt in its transformation to a hotel but has been gently and with some humour restored, then come here.

Fernie holds a special place in our hearts and we look forward to many returns there.

Firstly I would just like to say, Fernie Castle is only 450 years old, to some this might seem very old, but in the grand scheme of things its a pretty modern castle! I stayed in a double room last weekend for a friends wedding there & I would just like to say it was wonderful. The staff were warm & welcoming, the rooms were bright & spacious. The food was of an excellent standard, far better than experienced at weddings both at The Balmoral & The Caledonian Hotels in Edinburgh.

Don't go expecting Harry Potter type exposed brickwork & labyrinth type hallways, the walls are painted with trompe l'oeil murals & if taken at face value are fun & interesting. The Tree House/Honeymoon suite has to be seen to be believed it's like something from the Hobbit!

I have always maintained I would never marry in this country as the hotels are atrocious for reception venues, but I would consider this to be a place to change my mind, it's as light hearted & child like as I am, a thoroughly warming & lifting experience.
