“Wonderful value for lunch”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

This is a great place for lunch - we live too close to need to stay. The set lunch, particularly, the light lunch, is wonderful value. Quality food with sensible portions cooked to a very high standard. We will keep going back!

We stayed at the Woodside as a ploy to be able to use the railway into Edinburgh with accommodation at a premium within the ciity itself. The Woodside was a hundred yards from the eponymous railway station and had us in Waverley station in under an hour. The hotel was fine and the chef deserves a mention. There was nothing wrong at all with the food. I did not meet any of the rude staff mentioned in other assessments and found them very polite and helpful. The bedrooms were small but it is not a modern hotel . It is pleasantly situated and quiet at night, and during the day for that matter.

The mysterious moaning from the harbour area which cannot be heard from the hotel is probably seals but we could not see them on the pleasant walk down to the Firth.

As for the tattoo. My wife loved it. Having served alongside the Black Watch and RSDG in the 1980's I thought it was a lot of aggresive scotsmen wearing skirts and making a racket for the benefit of the tourists but then I may be a slightly biased Angllshman

Room Tip: small hotel no particular benefits to any room over another

We found this a great hotel for a family stay. It was clean, comfortable and spacious and the staff were friendly and welcoming. This is a great location, with castle, walks, beach and park all on the doorstep. The local shops are also full of charm; the kids were entranced with 'The Green Witch.' We would have no hesitation in recommending The Woodside; we'll be back.

We have stayed several times at this hotel. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms have been nice, clean and comfortable. Great location for taking the train to Edinburgh. Front rooms have nice view of park entrance. Breakfast service and food very good.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room, at the front on the first floor (US: second floor) with its spectacular view across the road to the gate-lodge and entrance to a 'park', had a high ceiling, and was quiet and comfortable. Full British breakfasts offered much more than we could/dared(!) to eat; the porridge was excellent (as one might expect in Scotland). The Clipper Bar is a room salvaged from a passenger sailing ship early in the 20th century and is really something splendid to behold. We were visiting friends who lived nearby thus we didn't have an opportunity to try Lunch or Dinner. We would certainly return on our next visit to Aberdour.

While parts of the Woodside could use an upgrade - rather tired swirly carpets and feeble lighting in the bedrooms - they do most things really well. Friendly staff, everything very clean and comfortable, decent car park. The Clipper Bar with its arched glass ceiling is a nice place to eat dinner, chat, enjoy a drink. The hotel is right in the village and five minutes walk from the station, where you can get frequent trains to Edinburgh or anywhere else. Take time to enjoy the station garden - it's a prize winner! And visit the beach and the harbour of Aberdour - another short walk from the hotel, but don't try to park down by the shore, it's hopeless. If you're a golfer, ask the staff about playing the local course - right by the sea with lovely views.

Room Tip: It's quieter at the back. I had room 8, which was nice.

Whilst in Aberdour i was looking for somewhere to have dinner. I popped into the Woodside hotel and was taken through to the clipper bar, which is a beautifully furnished bar with a stunning ornate ceiling from the Macintosh era. The staff were very friendly and polite, dinner was delicious and portions were very generous and i would certainly recommend the establishment to friends and family :) big thumbs up.
