“A romantic ruin with a turbulent past...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

We visited on a glorious suuny day, a brief reprieve in the poor summer.
The castle is not extensive but it was lovely to linger with a picnic and enjoy the riverside. The site is very well maintained and has information boards. Older children would be fascinated at the two pit prisons, the well and the vaulted rooms. An excellent place for a free and interesting family outing.
We enjoyed the visit very much before moving on to the coast. It's an attraction that can be incorporated in a day out to visit other local interests or the coast. East Linton is a pretty area with quaint villages, old kirks, woodland and glorious coast...

“A Little Gem hidden away”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

Well worth finding this beautifull castle at the side of a lovley flowing river, take time when walking through the old casle door/window and listen for the bats cherping above your head. Take a picnic and enjoy... and its free to get in. no loo's though!

“These photos aren't of Hailes Castle”

Hailes Castle is a great, small, free(!) castle. Not the safest for little kids though as right beside a steep slope leading to a river.

“Atractive ruin, but tricky to find”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2012

If you want a day out from Edinburgh or Haddington Hailes Castle is worth a visit, but really only on a sunny day.
The ruins are in reasonable condition, and the site is clean, but it is not extensive.

“Good for the imagination.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2011

When I go to the castle I usually park the car in East Linton and walk along the riverside with children and dog. The children love it as we see lots of birds and animals (horses and sheep) on the way and when we get to the castle they really use their imagination when exploring. There may only be ruins but the children still love it. We sometimes take a picnic and pretend that we are having a banquet and have servants to serve us. I sometimes think that a ruin can be more fun than a castle that you have to be careful not to touch or run about and of course it is a bonus that it costs nothing to get in!
