Briggsy3,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. Jay is fantastic at recommending dishes to our customers - we really do have something for everyone; from a platter of nibbles to the hottest of curries! For those who are brave our Phal is hotter than a Vindaloo! We hope to see you again soon. Look out for our offer of a starter, main course and tea/coffee or desert for £9.95 Monday to Wednesday in our restaurant if you like mid-week treats! Or we currently offer 2 curries and 2 sides for £9.95 or 2 kebabs for £7.95 when getting a takeaway or delivery. Our Facebook page has all of the details. Hope to see you again soon.

It is unfortunate that in this part of the world Asian cuisine has tended pander to the local palate. Thus there exists an abundance of restaurants where sugar dominates the cuisine. Spice falls into this category. The menu is huge proclaiming expertise in Punjabi, Bengali and Bangladesh cuisine, amongst other regional cookery, and an array of ‘specials’ and ‘chef’s recommendations’ - always a bad sign! At least two of the starters were unavailable - the baby squid and the pastiche of lamb - so the three of us ordered the chicken chat, prawn puri and Spice platter. We were assured that the chef makes his own samosas etc. Not so. The mixed starter contained the bite size party food variety that you get from frozen food stores, the samosa was in thin filo type pastry and the pakora was a small round ball of onion in stodgy flour. The bread accompanying the chicken chat and prawns was certainly not puri. A soft sweet fluffy round of dough rolled up in the middle of the plate with a large amount of salad on one side comprising of large whole lettuce leaves and thin strips of cucumber. A smattering of overcooked prawns were drowned in an oniony and tomato bland sauce. My fellow diner was unable to eat his chicken chat which was cooked in a sweet chilli sauce which is a popular gravy in these parts. The main course of chicken dansak was similarly sweet and unlike any dansak we had ever tasted. The chicken balti was barely acceptable and so was my vegetable methi - it was mainly potato and onion with the a few baby carrots and tiny green beans thrown in undoubtedly from a frozen packet. Not much trace of methi and their lack of fresh coriander was evident from the large sprig of parsley topping the dish. Pilau rice was aromatic and tasty but the chapattis were under cooked. The attentive staff did ask if we were enjoying our meal but were taken aback by our comments on the quality one appearing to believe that we were complimenting the food because he replied “thank you” when we complained about the sweetness. The service was polite and helpful and we tipped accordingly on a bill of £66.60 for three of us without desserts or wine. This overpriced establishment would not last a day in Brick Lane and arguably the only authentic part of the restaurant was the Indian music. We arrived at 7pm and left some two hours later. Including us there were just 11 diners in that period. For a Friday night that is poor trade.
If you want an overpriced ‘feed’ and an illusion of the exotic give Spice a try.

Hi timeagain,

Many thanks for your review of our restaurant, I'd like to take this time to respond to a few of your queries. It is widely accepted that the majority of Indian and Asian restaurants produce European food styled on the traditional version, this is to accommodate and provide for the demands and palettes of our customers. Occasionally, some of our dishes may be unavailable, this can be due to having large parties that have not booked in advance, or due to the unexpected popularity of the dish on that occasion.

I would very much like to assure you that our starters, including our samosas, are indeed made fresh by our chefs and would invite you to contact the restaurant and arrange a visit where you can observe this for yourself.

I can only apologize that our restaurant was not to your liking, as you can see from other reviews on this page many diners thoroughly enjoy our food, including many who have tried a variety of Indian restaurants cooking European cuisine. For those who enjoy authentic Indian dishes, we can and do provide this service, as can also be seen in our reviews. Regarding the quality and presentation of our food, please see our Facebook page for customer pictures.

The Spice restaurant our customers know and love will continue to offer a 3 course meal for £9.95 Monday to Thursday, 2 mains and 2 sides for £9.95 Monday to Wednesday (deliveries and takeaway) and will charge our very reasonable menu prices at weekends.

I hope this has provided you with some information regarding our establishment and we welcome your constructive opinion in the future.

Along with 6 other friends we have just enjoyed the most wonderful authentic Indian banquet at Spice. The whole thing came about after a discussion with Jay (The owner) during a previous visit. We were talking about the difference between "Europeanised" Indian food and traditional cooking. He offered to serve us a traditional banquet. So we organised a group of 8 friends and gave him a few days notice (To enable him to source/obtain the various ingredients, marinate and prepare).
It was worth waiting for as he served up a range of fish, chicken, lamb and vegetable dishes along with traditional salad, biryani and Dahl.
Every element was excellent and serve to the usual high Spice standard. A very nice contrast to the normal "Europeanised" Indian food. Although the normal menu food from Spice is still the best (of that type) in the area.

Hi Tully22,

I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your authentic Indian cuisine! Jay really does try his best to accommodate all of our diners and on this occasion I think it is safe to say he went even further to give you a full experience of traditional Indian cuisine. I hope you will dine with us again soon, European Indian food or otherwise.

Thanks,
Rachel

Spice is ideally located with two public car-parks less than 5 minutes walk away. With an excellent selection of fine Indian cuisine to choose from, good atmosphere and great level of customer service, I can highly recommend this popular restaurant. I’d also like to note that Spice offers some great mid-week offers and take-away / delivery service.

R_Kernohan,

Many thanks for you enthusiastic review! Our location is very central and great for a bite to eat before heading out in town or even further afield as we are so close to The Spinning Mill, a popular location to have a few drinks while waiting on taxis and buses. We are very pleased that you have enjoyed our food, offers and service and we hope to see you again soon.
