We stayed here for a weekend and did not read the reviews beforehand & to be honest if i had then we would not have stayed which would have been a shame as i think that the previous reviews have been exaggerated. We were welcomed upon arrival by the owners who are the friendliest people ever. They have there daughter & son working there so this really is a family business unlike the other hotels who are a chain and do not care about the individual. We found the place to be a lovely hotel and very charming interior. The food was great and we decided to stay for the sunday roast which was the best we had ever had - we really could not eat it all there was so much of it and you could tell that the veg was very fresh. All served quickly and no problems at all. After speaking to the owners in the bar we discovered that the place is being done up which to be honest may take some of the charm away from this lovely hotel. I really cannot understand some of the previous comments - if you want to pay ridiculous money for hotel then dont come here - £64 inc breakfast for 2 is real value for money - i would never go the the usual holiday inn tye of hotel as you would not get the personal touch. This hotel is in a great area and comfortable - the food was great and the staff even better - will be back for xmas - hope there is room as i know from word of mouth that it is the place to be.

Had two nights very comfortable bed. Breakfast basic but ok. Good central location with bus stop outside. Parking difficult had to go down side roads for overnight parking. Evening meal was very good.

In any scenario this hotel is less than bland and certainly needs an upgrade of facilities. The breakfast in our opinion was inedible except for the toast. I stayed here one night while going to a wedding in the area. Parking is practically non-existent. The main issue i had with the hotel, which i'm sure has affected my opinion of the rest of it, was that i unfortunately left a very expensive bottle of aftershave that had been bought for me as a present. This was almost 6 weeks ago. I live in Surrey so could not visit to pick it up and i even offered to pay for the postage. However, in spite both myself and my girlfriend phoning up and asking them to please send it, probably about half a dozen times, and in spite each time being told that it would be sent their promise never materialised. What makes this all the more galling was that i had, by mistake, taken the keys to the room back home with me but upon realising this called them to let them know i would post them back, which i did. Obviously, i now regret doing that. I wonder how they would have acted if i'd left my wallet with cash and credit cards there?! Basically, not a hotel that i would want to spend any money with but if you do decide to then just make sure you leave nothing behind! If however their level of customer service in other situations mirrors this then you'll probably have a bad experience even if you're less forgetful than i am! If they read this and decide to send my aftershave back then i'll update the review too.

This was the only room available in 15-mile radius after deciding to attend a wedding evening do in Wareham at the last minute! After reading the reviews of the Black Bear we weren't expecting much. It's a good job. A previous reviewer summed it up nicely - shabby but friendly. We arrived to a hurried greeting where the landlord didn't tell us about breakfast or where it was before he disappeared. We found our room (number 16) and on opening the door we were taken aback by the hideous stench of stale cigarettes, the window wide open and a fan on to try and clear the air - which did not have much effect. The room itself was dated, which we didn't find too much a problem, though the wiring left something to be desired. The bedding and bathroom were clean though, that was our main concern. Although the ceiling in bathroom and bedroom were mouldy, and the carpet at the bathroom door had shrunk to expose the gripper rods, which we found by treading on it! We went out to the evening do, and on returning to the room there was a fresh smell of cigarette smoke and a dog end floating in the toilet - which wasn't there before we went out! I would recommend if you do decide to stay here that you ask where in the hotel your room is. Our room looked over the street and it seemed the local kids liked to hang out here until 3 in the morning, so we didn't get much sleep before 4. Breakfast was fine, if basic. Our server was very friendly, efficient and helpful - although the interior of the breakfast room resembled an orange and lime Tictac explosion which was hard to stomach so early in the morning. When it came to checking out I mentioned to the landlord about the stench and he said the reason was an old couple has stayed there the previous week and they smoked a lot. When we told him we thought someone had been in the room smoking while we were out, his only comment was that he would put a camera on the landing. No 'sorry', no surprise, it seemed like this was expected. All in all this room was not worth the £64 we paid for it. Only go there if it's the last room for 15 miles!

If you have to stay in Wareham then don't stay at the Black Bear - we stayed there just one night (thank goodness it was just the one!) and it wasn't clean. No mattress cover on bed and I was bitten by something that was in the mattress ! It really needs the Hotel Inspector to go in and tell them what's going wrong.

If you need to stay in Wareham then stay at The Priory which we unfortunately found out about it too late.

We stayed in room 16. The door was open fully when we arrived with two elecric fans in operation. We inspected the room and was not keen but left to explore Wareham and locked the bedroom door behind us. When we returned the door had been opened again in our absence . We soon discovered why the fans were on and the window open as this was due to the awful smell of stale cigarette smoke dispite the fans/room door & window being left open. I can put up with a slight smell of cigarette smoke but this was really strong and smelt old and did not disapear so we had to smell this all night long.

The room was very dusty and the one of the curtains was hanging down. If that was not bad enough we were kept up until 1.30 in the morning due to noise from the bar DJ below our room which was extremely loud!

We got up the next morning at 6.00 am and decided to leave without breakfast as the hotel was so shabby and very unclean that we did not want to take the risk!

The publication where we saw the advert for the hotel said it had been recently refurbhised, we did not see any evidence of that during our stay.
