“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2012

We found it overpriced for what it was. The location is excellent and the gardens absolutely beautiful. Our courtyard room was far too small to be called a double and with no space for clothes etc. The other couple with us had a classic room and that was better but not fantastic considering the price. The meal in the restaurant was good but the short menu made us glad we were not staying for more than two nights. Breakfast was about average for this type of hotel and there was nothing to particularly recommend. Our overall opinion was that we had received better value elsewhere and would be unlikely to return.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the river would be the best choice

This visit was a 90th Birthday treat. Not sure what was happening today but the whole event was a let down. After being seated we were asked to move and shown the stairs. But with our guest being not as agile as she once was, this was not an option. At this point everyone stood in the door way looking at each other including the waiting staff. It continued in this strange vain with us pearched at to small tables just inside the door.

We are unsure as to the nature of this review. There is no mention of a meal or specific complaint except to say that they were asked to move; and the mention of one guest’s agility!

The Priory really is a little gem nestling by the river, but hidden away from the main area of town. The views are "chocolate box" pretty over the river and across the fields. You feel relaxed as soon as you walk through the door. The interior is warm and cosy with real log fires, oak panelled rooms and thick carpetted passageways. We stayed in the Purbeck Suite which was extremely comfortable and had a fab modern bathroom with lots of extra gadgets and features. The restaurant was superb. Excellent food and a top notch wine list. Although we were only there for four nights we felt as though we had stayed a fortnight. We'll be back!

There is little that one can add to the recent preceding reports. I have not bothered to look back to the guest who was disappointed. One can only assume he/she wrote the report on a bad (hair) day – it is hard to imagine they could fault The Priory!

Knowing and remembering guests’ names from the moment they check in may sound trivial but it adds such a sense of welcome and care. Well done.

Our bedroom was comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated.

We enjoyed a delightful dinner that would score top marks in any food guide. The atmosphere and quality of service in the dining room were perfect. Every course was a gem. We drank the house wines by the glass – they were highly drinkable and not over priced.

The riverside garden is far more spacious than first appearance suggests. For our visit in October we could do little but walk around – but it must be a lovely place in which to sit and relax in the summer.

We can’t wait for an opportunity to return.

Lovely homely atmosphere, excellent food and service, and warm sunshine. Really clean and comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms. The gardens and river views spectacular. Just got home and struggling to come back to earth again.

Just stayed 4 nights in the Boathouse Suite on our wedding anniversary.

Excellent accomodation, excellent meals, pretty setting, delightful ambience in the lovely restaurant and staff that really care. Just that extra bit of class shows in the way staff are trained to remember your name at meal times and when checking in and out.

I stay in many hotels in different parts of the the World and this one has to be amongst the best.

I start by saying how staggered I am at a couple of reviewers maintaining poor service and a dissmissive attitude from the staff. My family have regularly held significant celebrations at The Priory as the care and attention that is afforded has never dropped below first class. My wife and I celebrate our Anniversay annually in the Hotel's Abbots Cellar restaurant (we are fortunate to live within easy reach) and last week the standard was, as always, superb.
The setting is luxurious country house style, faded gentility perhaps, but immaculate in every feature. One can imagine the lawn being manicured with scissors!
The staff are always welcoming and professional. The food is superb and the wine list caters for every taste with wines, from all over the world, ranging in price from just over £20 to thousands of pounds! The dinner menu works out at about £50 per head for three courses but it is top quality food, served beautifully. To retire after the meal for a coffee and digestif in the lounge, with petit fours, tops off the whole evening.
If you like a traditional country house style with modern cuisine, without minimalistic portions, and want to spoil yourself without breaking the bank, then please give The Priory a try.
