We went to Stock Hill for my mother's 90th birthday, a family gathering of 7 poeple. We were welcomed by the owner on the doorstep with a hige smile, shown to a snug area where we had pre lunch drinks. The chef/patron is Austrian and this is reflected in the menu which contained 7 or 8 selections per course. Austrian dishes were marked with a small Austrian flag on the menu. The dining room was just the right size for us and another party of about the same size. The cost of lunch was under £19 for 2 courses and under £23 for three, plus drinks. The food was absolutely brilliant. I had leek and potato soup which was very flavoursome and perfectly seasoned. Other members of the party had the pate which was equally enjoyed. The main courses sampled were confit of duck leg, slow roasted silverside of beef, and stuffed sole fillets. The main courses were all cooked to perfection, accompanied by a selection of freshly cooked vegetables, all beautifully presented. The sweets were equally as good. The service was attentive, very proffesional and timely. We went back to the snug for coffee and a chat. Stock Hill is a very old house stuffed with antiques. This was just the right place for what was a very memorable lunch. Do not hesitate to visit. It is worth a very large detour if you want very good food and excellent service. I am sure we will visit again in the not too distant future.
